Septs:
A Sept is a family name which can be related to a clan or larger family in various ways: female descendents of the Chief, through marriage, consequently bare a different surname; also Sept related are those who sought and obtained the protection of a larger more powerful neighbouring Clan or family thus becoming dependents. Anyone who has an ancestor bearing a Sept name, or the Clan name itself, has the privilege of wearing or displaying the Crest Badge and the tartan of the clan. Many names which are recorded as septs have since become clans in their own right and many can be related to more than one clan.
