Who
was Roger Delk: A Brief Biography
Roger
Delk (also appears as Dilke in many records) married his first
wife Sarah in England and they had a daughter, Elizabeth born
April 1622 in Middlesex, London. Roger Delk arrived from England
to Virginia aboard the ship "South Hampton" in 1624.
This was one of Sir
Walter Raleigh's ships used on his last expedition to South
America. It is most probable that his wife was to follow later,
but most likely died before. In any case shortly after his arrival
he married Alice Davenport who had arrived in the New World
on the same boat as him.
Roger was indentured to John Chew and employed in 1624 on his
plantation on Hog Island. He worked out his indenture by 1626,
and in 1628, Francis West, "Governor and Captaine Generall",
granted him 1,000 acres on Lawne`s Creek which flows into the
James River just below Hog Island. The size of this patent suggests
the possibility of some influence having been exerted in his
behalf.
He rose rapidly in esteem and was chosen to represent Stanley
Hundred in the House
of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly in the western
world. |
|
He
served during the session that began on Feb. 1, 1632/33 and
may have lived too above his means at Jamestown (then called
"James Cittie"), while attending the assembly in 1634
for he was outlawed for debts and a capias
was issued against him.
He appears to have died before 1635 as Alice his wife was registering
land in her own name. He had one son Roger II. His Wife Alice
remarried Nicholas Reynolds and had two more sons. The 1,000
acres on Lawne's Creek, granted to Roger Delk I. by Gov. Francis
Westand then became due Nicholas Reynolds on 26 Aug. 1637, he
having married Alice, the widow of Roger. Roger II. inherited
this land when he came of age.
On Aug. 23 1661: Roger Delk (II) (and his wife Rebecca) out
of love & affection made a deed to his "(half)brothers
Francis and Robert Rennells, born of his mother Alice Gregory
(wife of John Gregory) by her (2nd) husband, Nicholas Reynolds
(dec.) of Lawne's Creek," for a tract of land in Surry
Co.

GREETINGS
friends, cousins, and fellow researchers.
The circulation of the Newsletter is now up to 67! The organization of the
eMail communications between cousins is getting to be a full time job. To
make my life a little easier I ask everyone to please include your full
name on all correspondences - first and last! It saves me time when I sort
them into 67 files (one for each of you). I have received a few eMails with
no name at all and had to go through my eMail address book to identify the
author. Please spare me that. MEASURES
AGAINST SPAM
In the past I have tried to include the eMail addresses of all those who
had submitted material. This was done to make it easier for you to contact
each other. The problem with this is that addresses are being collected
by web crawlers to send spam. For those of you who are new to computers,
SPAM is the unsolicited advertisement one gets via eMail. In order to
prevent your eMail addresses from getting picked up by web spam (advertisement)
crawlers, I will continue to include the eMail address, but they will
no longer be live eMail links (not clickable).
For those of you who do not know what a crawler is: It is a program that
crawls all over the world wide web visiting every page it can and looks
for addresses (or strings of words that have the "@" in the
middle of it - which it understands to be an eMail address). It then automatically
takes that address and begins sending junk mail to it.
PLEASE NOTE: to avoid spam abuse all "@" symbols have been
replaced by a gif image
This prevents crawlers from reading eMail addresses and sending you spam.
You can cut and paste the addresses but you will have to add the "@"
back in manually.
Other tips to
prevent spam:
1. Do not answer the "Click here to be removed from this mailing
list". By answering it they will know they have a valid address and
sell your address to other stammers
2. Do not even bother to open mail from unknown senders. Some of them
have very sophisticated tricks that automatically confirm the address
as soon as you open it. It's like Pandora's Box - you are curious to see
what's in the eMail from an unknown sender, you know you should not open
it, and when you do, you let out a whole lot of trouble with spammers
3. There are also programs that filter out spam, but I do not use them
as they sometimes filter out important eMails from newly found cousins
and other wanted mails.
4. Do not post your eMail all over the place. The more often you do the
more likely crawlers will find your address. If you do post your eMail
address in the body of a message use (a) vs. @. Most people will understand
that the (a) is an @, but crawlers will not.
5. Many sites like ancestry.com have safe guards to protect your address.
If you ever used the "Author" link on the message boards to
get the eMail address of the author, you will have noticed you can not
copy and paste the eMail address. The address is a picture and not type.
Crawler programs can not read that. So if you have your own Home Page
put your eMail in picture form (.jpg, .gif or similar).

you may visit:

For those of you who have your own Home Pages and would like to join the
war against spam just add the following code to your home page:
Fight
Spam! Click Here!
This will lead crawlers to a site that is full of false addresses (strings
of letters with @ in the middle and ending in dot : com, org, or similar.
The invalid addresses tie up the spammer's computer space. It does not
stop them but it is annoying for them. If I'm going to be annoyed by there
spamming then they can be annoyed by me.

Hi, my name is Billie Franklin Gee Williams. I am one of the Delk
Cousins through both of my grandparents, Dave and Laura (Delk) Franklin.
I was born in 1932 in Fentress Co, TN, about 2 miles from where I now live.
I graduated from the Alvin
C. York high school (as in WW I
hero) in 1951. In the fall of that year I went to Cincinnati, Ohio to attend
college. I got married in 1953 and have 3 children. I worked for the Kroger
Co for 13 years, retiring in 1979 when I got married to Ralph Williams.
He worked for a company that owned a chain of hospitals so we moved several
times. We lived in Houston, TX, Hickory, NC, Atlanta, GA, and Palm Beach
Co, FL. While living in NC I went back to College and got my Nursing license.
In FL I worked as a Private Duty nurse.
My husband was diagnosed with Carcinoid Cancer in 1985 after having surgery.
He had a reoccurrence of his cancer with surgery in 1991. That time the
doctor couldn't remove the affected area. This is a slow growing cancer
- he is now 17+ years post diagnosis. We then decided to move here.
I have fond memories of my great-grandpa Dudley (Pa) Delk. I also had a
wonderful Aunt Maggie and Oscar Franklin. Every child should have family
like them.
Since moving here I have done substitute teaching, became a volunteer at
our hospital (I now serve as President) and am involved with church work.
I am happy being retired and do enjoy living where I do today. To quote
the lady who came to give us a quote on insurance "you have a million
dollar view".

Charlie was born July 24, 1945 in Jamestown, Tennessee. I am Renee, Charlie's
wife and I am writing this for him because surgery for a brain aneurysm
in September, 2001, severely affected Charlie's communication abilities.
Charlie graduated
from Alvin C. York
Institute in Jamestown and joined the Navy. During his time in the
Navy he served a tour in Vietnam. He later joined the Army and was stationed
in Korea.
I am Charlie's third
wife. His first wife was Micki (don't know maiden name). They had two
children, Loretta and Jerry. They both live in Indiana. His second wife
was Tedonna Dowell. They also had two children, M'lee and Daniel. M'lee
lives in Burleson, Texas, and Daniel lives in Lubbock, TX. Charlie and
I stopped at one child, a daughter, Lindsay, who is 10 years old. We live
in Texarkana, Texas. Charlie is retired from Red River Army Depot.
I particularly enjoyed
the article on Sgt. Alvin York in the last Delk Newsletter, as Charlie
has a pretty direct connection with him. Charlie's grandmother (who was
actually more like his mother since she raised him), Ida (Brooks) Delk,
was first cousins with Alvin. Ida's father and Alvin's mother were brother
and sister. Charlie knew Alvin & Gracie well, and was granted leave
from the Navy to attend his funeral.

until his retirement on 31 August, 1992.
His military decorations
and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal with one Oak Leaf
Cluster, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Defense Meritorious
Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters,
the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award

Editors notes: Thank you for the
longer than average autobiography. In my opinion one can never write too
much. For me the autobiographical material is what makes the genealogical
research personal and interesting. Just collecting names and dates is
not very exciting, but getting to know about real people (family) is the
fun part. Its making American history interesting by weaving it into our
own family's past and present. We are the history of tomorrow.

I am from Cape May, New Jersey. If you look at a map of the state my town
is located at the very bottom. It is an Historic Landmark Town, one of
only a few in the country. My children are 7th generation Cape May on
their fathers side.
My genealogy search started on a whim when I purchased a computer in 1998.
Delk was the only family name there was any information on and I could
not hook up my line with the information until about 2000. I have been
hooked on finding all my lines since 1998.
My fathers mother was a Delk. He is from Fentress Co .Tennessee. He met
my mother in New Jersey during WWII. All my siblings and I were born in
NJ.
On my mothers side, her family were Dutch and helped settle New York in
the 1600's with the Dutch West
settlers. This was easy as I soon found a complete book written on the
settlement, with notations on my mother.
I have become completely addicted to finding my roots. It's wonderful
that I can continue to connect "over the pond" now.

IV. FEATURE: Delk Religious Leaders
As many living descendents of the Roger Delk either come from or still live
in southern states - also known as the bible-belt - I thought it might be
interesting to investigate the issue of religious affiliation in the Delk
family. If you can add any Delk religious leaders or additional info
about individuals featured in this section please contact me: Fabian

Samuel Gill Delk, Joshua Vernon Delk, Allen Freed Delk, and James
Vernon Delk
David Delk of Tilton, Whitfield County, Georgia
Tilton was laid out as a railroad town. David Delk, the major land
holder, donated land for the depot, public square and the Methodist Church.
Delk laid out lots and sold them for homes and businesses. Tilton was incorporated
in 1871 and grew steadily until the early 1900's. The town covered an area
about a mile square and had several doctors, churches, school, a Masonic
lodge, sawmill, depot, post office, gun shop, saloon, hotel, warehouse,
cotton gin and an eating place for railroad workers.
By the turn of the century,
Tilton had a large profitable lumber and sawmill business that employed
a number of people. Just after 1900, when the new Dixie Highway (US Highway
41) by-passed the town, traffic was drawn away and a slow but continuous
decline began. Today the town, no longer incorporated, has a cement factory,
a couple of churches and a few houses, but not many intact historic resources
survive.

Picture donated
by Thomas Seale.
The information below was provided by Gene Allred. ussgene mississippi.net
According to a
sign placed in front of the church, it was established in 1840. The
land was donated by Vincent Delk, who owned a large tract of
land in and around the town of Tamola. The
original location was closer to Tamola. |
|
|
The church was moved
to the present location in 1857, when Elias A. Delk, made a deed
on December 31,1856, to the trustee's of the church Mr. Thomas F. Burton,
Robert T. Delk, Benjamin Herrington, Richard S. Cole and Wesley
Seals. The first tombstone that still exists is dated May 16,1857. Elias
A. Delk, was the administrator of the estate of Vincent Delk,
who had died on September 25,1856, the church is located about 2 miles
north of the intersection of the Tamola Rd and the Mt. Hebron Rd. in the
Southwest quarter of Section 28, Township 9N, Range 18E.
Some of the original
families that attended Mt. Hebron were Clays, Hortons, Granthams, Roberts,
Hendersons, Hatchers, Gordons, Murphys, Gordys, Cherrys, Wrights, Glovers,
Garretts and others.
Some of the early
ministers who served this church were the Reverends Gann, Stovall, John
Burton, and Joel P. Williams. After the Porterville Charge was organized
the ministers at Mt. Hebron were the same as those for Chapel Hill and
Union United Methodist Churches.
The original building
burned in 1910 and the current building was built in 1911. By the 1970's
the congregation had dwindled to only a few, the building and piano were
in need of repair and the cost of these repairs would have been large
for the handful of elderly members who mostly came from Lauderdale, in
Lauderdale County to the south and the few members who still lived in
southeast Kemper County, so it was decided to suspend services for awhile.
This was the oldest
Methodist church on the Porterville Charge, and in 1981 the older members
not wanting to see the church become totally inactive, along with some
of the younger members of the Seale, Clay, Grantham, Brantley, Gordon
Families, and some new members decided to revive the old church on a part
time basis. Money and materials were donated to repair the roof, put an
underlay board and carpet on the floor, buy a good used piano, and new
heating equipment. The District Superintendent of the Methodist Church,
along with the local pastor agreed to have services there every fifth
Sunday.
Since 1970 there have
only been a few burials in the cemetery, and these are mostly the oldest
members that remain in the area.
Additional information
on Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church... submitted by Thomas Seale.
The church was established
by 05 June 1848 as Mount Hebron Methodist Episcopal Church South and was
a part of the Alabama Conference until about 1870. Vincent Delk,
a prominent land owner, conveyed land for the church. The original location
is believed to have been about a mile to the west at or near Tamola Station.
This was likely changed as the result of the Federal Land Grant Railroad
Act signed by President Millard Fillmore in 1850 giving certain sections
of land in each township to the railroad. A log church was constructed
at the present location by 1857 on land conveyed to the trustees of the
church by Elias A. Delk, son of Vincent Delk and administrator
of the estate of Vincent Delk who had died on 25 September 1856.
This deed was signed on 31 December 1856 and the trustees were Thomas
F. Burton, Robert T. Delk, Benjamin Harrington, Richard S. Cole,
and Wesley Seals. The original log church at the present location burned
to the ground in 1910 as the result of a forest fire that started from
a sawmill operated by Sumter Lumber Company in the area. Sumter Lumber
Company furnished lumber and a new church was constructed by the members
and their neighbors and opened in 1911.
By the 1950's the
population in the area started to decline as many left the area in search
for jobs. In 1976 the congregation had dwindled to a few and the church
building was in need of repair. The cost of repairs would have been large
for the few remaining members and it was decided to suspend services.
In 1981 some of the remaining members of the church decided to revive
the church on a part time basis. Money and materials were donated to repair
the roof, overlay and carpet the floor, and buy a used piano to replace
the old piano, which was in need of considerable repair. The District
Superintendent of the United Methodist Church and the pastor of the Porterville
Charge agreed to have service every fifth Sunday.
Two cemeteries are
located at the church with the first tombstone dated May 16, 1857. The
second cemetery was located across the road to the west of the church
where slaves were buried. Slaves attended Mt. Hebron and some former slaves
continued to attend services until around 1900. Their descendants are
still being buried in the cemetery.
Some of the original
families that attended Mt. Hebron were Clay, Horton, Grantham, Henderson,
Hatcher, Gordon, Gordy, Murphy, Roberts, Cherry, Wright, Glover, Garrett,
Burton, Seale, Harrington, McArthur and others.
Early pastors of the church were mostly Circuit Riders. During the late
1800's and early 1900's the pastors were assigned to the Lauderdale Circuit
or the Porterville Circuit when a pastor was available for that circuit.
Since around 1908 the church has been a part of the Porterville Circuit
or charge. Some early pastors were Reverends Clegg, Reed, Gann, Stovall,
Browning, John Burton, W. J. Burton, and Joel Williams.
The church is located about 6.5 miles south of Porterville in Kemper County
and 6.8 miles north northeast of Lauderdale, Mississippi and is 1.1 miles
north of the intersection of the Tamola and Mt. Hebron Road in Section
29, Township 9N, Range 18E.

John Andrews Delk
Notes: Duly
ordained: 24 Sep 1916 to active spheres of ministry Poplar Baptist Church
Waycross, GA
-William H. Delk and John Andrew Delk built homes near that of their family,
and resided there with their wives (both daughters of Sandford V. Chandler)
and families during the early part of their lives. Annie & John after
marrying lived in a small tenant house on Annie's father's farm near the
Ware Place on August Road. At the end of that year they moved to Ludowici,
Georgia. They lived in another, but larger, tenant house, called the Tile
Place, which was part of the W. S. Delk farm.
-J. A. Delk was both Moderator & Chairman of Executive Committee of
BAPTIST UNION ASSOCIATION held with Ella Grove Church in Tattnall Co. GA
on Oct 10th, 11th and 12th 1919
John was buried 29 Dec 1921 at Gumbranch Cemetery, Georgia
MEMORIAL
OF ELD. J. A. DELK, LUDOWICI, GA.
Eld. John Andrews Delk, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Delk of Liberty
County, GA, and was born August 31, 1880, near Gumbranch, GA, and Gumbranch
Church. He grew up in favor with God and man and about the age of 14 years,
he joined the Gumbranch Baptist Church, where he lives the life of a consistent
Christian Gentleman, and was married to Miss Annie Chandler, of Greenville,
S. C. on the 12th day of January 1904. He felt the high and noble calling
of Preaching and thus began his ministerial career in 1906. He attended
Furman University of Greenville, S. C. endeavoring to provide the necessity
of his family and secure the University training in 1908, striving to
the extend of great hardships. He then moved to Waycross, GA, and worked
for Mr. Baxter, in the furniture business and was religiously connected
with the Second Baptist Church of that city and served as Pastor for a
while, in an active way. In that city, he was highly esteemed and later
moved back to Liberty Co., and settled him a home near the place of his
nativity, where he could be near to his aged father in his declining years.
He thus lived and strived to the interest of his God, home, and Country.
He moved his Church membership to Poplar Baptist Church from Waycross,
GA, and on the 24th day of September 1916 he was duly ordained to active
spheres of the Ministry: and the Presbytery consisting of Elders O. B.
Rustin, and A. V. Barnard of Glennville, GA.
He was called to the Pastoral Care of Ella Grave Baptist Church and served
as such one pastorate and supplied the Bragg Baptist Church, in Bryan
Co., a short while. To show the esteem in which he was held by his brethren,
he was elected to the Moderatorship at the Baptist Union Association in
October 1916, and served consequently until October 1920, being four years
and declined re-election on the account of his then failing health. He
was also a member of the Executive Committee of the above Association
for four years. He was also one of the Directors of the Christian Liberator
until his decease. He was a man above the average in his community and
country in the interest of education, religion, and common morals. He
was a man that lived above reproach and suspicion and was very devoted
to his family from wife to children. He manifested the greatest of interest
in them and in their welfares of life. In 1921, he and his wife and eon
moved their Church membership to the Rye-Patch Baptist Church near Ludowici,
GA, where his aged father's membership is. In the year of 1917, be was
seriously attacked of Pneumonia, and its powerful mastery of his system,
from which he never did fully recuperate. It developed into a chronic
throat condition, from which he suffered for months. Never-the-less, he
worked on under painful circumstances until late in the autumn of 1921
when he was compelled to surrender to the then slow approach of the dreaded
messenger of the human mind and carnal temperament to await the execution
of the in-evitable fate which is the common lot of all men. Sensible of
his having to obey the messenger's command, he related his last testament
to his loved ones of his disposition of his earthly goods and the repose
of his soon to be life-less body. So on the night of Dec. 28, 1922, about
1 o'clock, the Chief Shepherd of the Flock, Christ, and God the Father
called him from earthly responsibilities to that of rest-for-evermore.
He died the Hero for his Lord and Master.
On December 29, his remains were laid to rest in the Gumbranch Cemetery
with Masonic Honors, the same of which he was a faithful member of for
quite a number of years. The funeral discourse was delivered by his Pastor
Eld. O. B. Rustin, of Glennville, GA, and participated in by the following
Ministers, Elders A. V. Barnard of Glennville, Georgia, W. C DeLoach of
Willie, Georgia, W. J. Edwards of Willie, Georgia, Chas. Soarboro of Ludowici,
Georgia. The Pall Bearers were all Ministers, the same as concurred in
the funeral procedures; Elders Rustin, Barnard, DeLoach, Edwards, Scarboro,
Hodges, and they were all Masons, participating in the ritualistic rites
of the Masonic Procedures.
Elder Delk is survived by his aged father, Mr. W. S. Delk, his mother
having gone on before to the realms of the unknown to moral sensibilities.
His other survivors are his beloved wife and five children as follows:
sons: Shelton, 17 years, Lucius, 14 years, J. A. Jr. 11 years, David,
3 months, Marion, 2 years, and one brother, Dr. W. H. Delk, of Greenville,
S. C. and sisters as follows; Mrs. J. F. Howard, Lakeland, Fla., Mrs.
M. B. McDonald, of Wauchula, Fla., Mrs. J. A. Kirkland, Glennville, Ga.,
Mrs. D. I. Dawson of Hinesville, GA., and Mrs. J. R. McDonald, of Odum,
Ga.
The Church and country has lost a good man, earth hath its losses and
eternity its gains.
To the Bereaved and Survivors we tender our heartfelt condolences, and
in the language of the Postees, we pray;
"Tarry with, O my Savior lay my head upon thy breast Till thee; then
awake me, Morning of eternal rest."
Dedication
I humbly and lovingly dedicate this memorial to my dear brother and co-laborer
in Common Cause of our loving and Ardent Master.
His Pastor, O. B. Rustin, Glennville, Ga.

Annie Theresa Chandler
Notes
for Annie Theresa Chandler: Annie
was born 23 Oct 1881 daughter of Sandford Vandiver Chandeler &
Hannah Teresa Adair. She died 17 Jan 1975,and was buried at Woodlawn
Cemetery on a lot belonging to Marion and Bill Delk.
She was of Greenville, S. C. (another source Masons says Pelzer SC)
Because of the many house chores and farm duties, Annie's schooling
ended in the fourth grade. Annie was only five years old when her
oldest sister, Alice, married at age fifteen. Two and a half years
later her second sister, Elizabeth (Sally), married at age fifteen.
When Annie was only fourteen years old her third sister, Mamie, married
at age twenty. This left Lou Ella and Annie to do most of the work.
Lou Ella, Annie's oldest sister, married on December 28, 1899 at age
twenty one. Annie was then eighteen years old with four young brothers
and her mother needed her help with their care.
Not much is known about Annie's teenage life except she developed
into an attractive, lovely and likeable young lady.
Her husband's
father, John Andrew, suffered a |
|

stroke, so on her birthday, October 23, 1915, with tears in her
eyes, Annie and family moved to Liberty County near her husband's
father's farm. In 1920 John Andrews moved the family into a six
room house he built on a track of land his father gave him.
On December 28, 1921 John Andrews died leaving Annie with five boys
- the youngest only three months old. |
| |
|
In
March of 1922 Annie moved in with her parents near the Ware Place,
SC. Five boys were too much for Annie's parents so in the early spring
of 1923 Annie sub-rented from Hugh Stone the Putnam farm on Augusta
Road. That winter (1923) Annie agreed to buy from her father the house
and farm previously owned by her brother Raymond. After two years
there, in the winter of 1925 Anne moved to Greenville where she lived
for two years, and in 1927 returned to her farm on the Augusta Road.
In 1939 Annie sold her farm and on January 1, 1940 she moved into
a house at 315 E. Hillcrest Drive. Greenville, Sc. Annie loved that
house, the location, the neighbors, and was very happy there. On January
17, 1975 she died. She was 93 years and 3 months old at the time.
John & Annie were married 12 Jan 1904
Another source says Jan. 10 but this date
is most likely the issue of the license |

Aug 1837- 1911:
I have included all responses so that the reader can identify
close cousins and correspond.
From military records we have a physical description of Thomas G. Delk
at age 25 he was described as: 5 feet 8 1/4 inches, fair complexion, brown
hair and blue eyes.
Baptist preacher, 1863 yeoman
Thomas Greer Delk was a minister. He preached at the Duff Church in
Gilbert, Arkansas. I think it is a Baptist Church. I think he also probably
preached at others, but I don't know the names. I'm not sure if any other
of my Delks were ministers.

As for religion, most of my family were Baptists. I am Presbyterian. Thomas
Greer Delk (my Great-Grandfather) was a Baptist minister in Arkansas.
His wife, Sarah, was Dutch and I have traced her line back to Leiden which
is the village/town that Rembrandt was born and during the same time period.
We have been to Holland twice, but I did not know this at the time. We are
planning another trip and I hope to spend some time searching the records
there.

Delk elders in the Churches of Christ: Samuel Gill Delk, Joshua Vernon Delk,
Allen Freed Delk, and James Vernon Delk have in each of their
lifetimes served as an Elder for congregations of the Churches of Christ.
Again this is not a preaching job, or that of a minister.
Churches of Christ are overseen by lay leaders known as elders. In congregation
is overseen by a multiplicity of elders service as a governing board. I

V. SO CLOSE and yet SO FAR: Proven Cousins that can't be contacted
As in the last issue I am asking for your help to contact lost & found
(or found & lost?) cousins. These are cousins that according to the
information that they have posted on the net (generally speaking on either
ancestry.com or genealogy.com) are ascertained to be descendents of Roger

I encourage everyone who has ever posted an on-line query to check ancestry.com
& genealogy.com to make sure that the contact address you gave is still
valid (or was written correctly!). Maybe someone has been trying to reach
you in vain with that bit of info that can help you hurdle your brick wall!

VI. POLL RESULTS: DELK RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS
:
As I have not received everyone's answers yet the end
results and an analysis will be included in the next issue.
| NOTE:
If I have linked you to a wrong faith please forgive me. Please
inform me of a web site that best describes your faith and I
will change it. Further, as a Deist,
I respect the right of all people to believe, or not to believe,
in God, as they chose and I will never attempt to deny anyone
that basic freedom. |

From
a letter written by Benjamin Franklin to Ezra Stiles,
9 March 1790 (B 12:185-6):
You desire to know something of my religion. It is the first
time I have been questioned upon it. But I cannot take your
curiosity amiss, and shall endeavor in a few words to gratify
it. Here is my creed. I believe in one God, the creator of the
universe. That he governs by his providence. That he ought to
be worshipped. That the most acceptable service we render to
him is doing good to his other children. That the soul of man
is immortal, and will be treated with justice in another life
respecting its conduct in this. These I take to be the fundamental
points in all sound religion, and I regard them as you do in
whatever sect I meet with them.
Benjamin Franklin was a Deists (see definitions

Agnostic: a
person who believes that, at our present level of knowledge, we cannot
know whether or not a God exists. Agnosticism: is not a religion
or complete ethical system. It is simply a belief that we cannot prove
either the existence or the non-existence of deity; (i.e. of one or more
gods, one or more goddesses, or combinations of the above). Many Agnostics
believe that we cannot know anything about deity or deities at the present
time, but that this could conceivably change in the future. The terms
agnosticism and agnostic were invented by Huxley in 1869
to describe the philosophical and religious attitude insisting that people
can have scientific or real knowledge of phenomena only. When it comes
to what may lie behind phenomena God, immortality, etc. there
can be no evidence that entitles anyone either to deny or affirm anything.

Deism A
theology that emerged in the 18th century. Many of the Founders of this
country were Deists - Benjamin Franklin and others who suggested what might
best be called a clockwork universe. Rather than believing in a God who
was continuously present and active in human and natural affairs, the Deists
posited a God whose role was to be the clock winder - putting the whole
thing into motion, then stepping back and allowing it to run. The Deist
god was not a pastoral being, a caring deity involved in human affairs.
God was impartial, even indifferent to human experience. At least this God
is allowed to keep the Creator role so important to Christian theology -
ordaining the physical principles by which the universe runs, then getting
out of the way. But while Deism may have delayed the rupture between orthodoxy
and science, it provided scant comfort to people who were struggling to
understand their place in the universe, or the reasons for personal suffering.
The Declaration of Independence is theologically Deism and appeals to "nature's
laws and to nature's God." What is Deism? Deists are Unitarians
who reject the claims of divine revelation and look for the one only God
through reason and observation of nature.
Well known Deists included: Thomas
Paine, Revolutionary hero Ethan Allen, 1st President George
Washington, 2nd President John Adams, 3rd President Thomas
Jefferson, 4th President James Madison,10th President John Tyler, 16th
President Abraham Lincoln, , founding
father Benjamin
Franklin. Non-americans: Albert
Einstein, Denis
Diderot, William
Hogarth, David Hume,
Voltaire, Charles Darwin

| I
hope no one thinks that the Newsletter is turning religious or trying
to convert anyone. That said and done, I do think that understanding
a persons religion does help to understand that person. Why else
would all the genealogical programs, individual cards and questionnaires
include the space for religion? As a genealogist I am interested
not only in an individuals stats, but also want to know a little
about the persons character. My religion, Deism, will not be pushed
in future editions. It is simply my attempt for you to get to know
me better. Deism is a part of my life. It is for this reason that
I am including the following:
I firmly believe
in the following Deistic (and some Unitarian) principles.
''I believe
in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.
I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties
consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make
our fellow creatures happy. I believe it is only in the CREATION
that all our ideas and conceptions of a Word of God can unite. The
Creation speaks a universal language, independently of human speech
or human language, multiplied and various as they may be. It is
an ever existing original, which every man can read. It cannot be
forged; it cannot be counterfeited; it cannot be lost; it cannot
be altered; it cannot be suppressed. It does not depend upon the
will of man whether it shall be published or not; it publishes itself
from one end of the earth to the other. It preaches to all nations
and to all worlds; and this Word of God reveals to man all that
is necessary for man to know of God.''
Further, I respect
the right of all people to believe, or not to believe, in God, as
they chose and I will never attempt to deny anyone that basic freedom.
I will, however, promote Deism to the best of my ability.
To prevent myself
from becoming a slave to any idea, opinion, creed, dogma, or philosophy,
whether religious or political, I will always keep my mind open
to opposing views and honestly examine them using reason as my guide.
As an advocate
of the natural religion, Deism, I will foster environmental awareness.
Instead of looking upon Nature as something that needs to be "subdued"
and "taken dominion over", as the Bible teaches, I will
look upon it as something beautiful and fragile that I am a living
part of, and that I owe a responsibility to. I will enjoy Nature,
and protect it.
I will make
every effort to live by the principles of Deism, and to make others
aware of this profound and simple creed. I want to do my part in
the Deist struggle against superstition and unreasonableness. I
recognize that much of the world's suffering and warfare is based
on religious bigotry and the best method of stopping it is to promote
a natural creed that is equally evident and available to everyone. |
Humanism
is a doctrine, attitude, or way of life centered on human interests or values,
stressing an individual's dignity and worth and capacity for self-realization
through reason and other human skills. It usually rejects supernaturalism,
but some religious people consider themselves humanists. Presbyterian

Unitarianism is any form of Christianity that denies the Trinity.
In nineteenth century America, Unitarian ideas took root in various Congregational
churches, especially in New England. In the mid-1900s, the American Unitarian
Church merged with the Universalists, forming the Unitarian Universalists.
Unitarian
Universalism In the mid-1900s, the American Unitarian Church merged
with the Universalists, forming the Unitarian Universalists.
Universalism In comparative religion, a universalist religion is
a religion that is open for inclusion to anyone regardless of ethnicity.
Ethnic religions, like ethnicity itself, can be determined not just by genealogy,
but by geography, language, and other social boundaries. Universalism is
the doctrine that all people will eventually be saved and go to heaven when
they die. Some universalists believe that some will endure a limited period
of punishment before going to heaven. Almost all denominations of Christianity,
however, reject universalism as a doctrine. Although isolated theologians,
such as Origen in the 3rd century, have expressed universalist positions
throughout the history of Christianity, universalism bloomed within post-enlightenment
liberal Christianity and became popular on the American frontier during
the Second Great Awakening in the 19th century. This movement lead to the
formation of the Universalist Church of America, which later merged in 1961
with the American Unitarian Association to form the Unitarian Universalist
Association. However, because Unitarian Universalism is officially creedless,
no member of that denomination is required to believe in the doctrine of
universalism.

VII. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS & QUESTIONS TO ANSWERS
I have received many questions from many people. Some I have been able to
answer some not. It is my experience that when something is asked there
are often other people who have asked themselves the same question but never
bothered or were not able to find an answer. I am therefore including all
questions that I have been able to answer in this section. If you have questions
you want answered post them to me and if I can't help directly, I will include
them in this space. Maybe someone else has the answer or knows where to
look. Many people looking together for a needle in a haystack will find
it quicker.

Closing sermon words
A preacher was completing a temperance sermon: with great expression he
said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it
into the river." With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I
had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."
And then finally,
he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it
and throw it into the river."
He sat down. The song
leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For
our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: "Shall We Gather at the
River."

Miracles
A religious man is on top of a roof during a great flood. A man comes by
in a boat and says "get in, get in!" The religious man replies,
" no I have faith in God, he will grant me a miracle."
Later the water is
up to his waist and another boat comes by and the guy tells him to get
in again. He responds that he has faith in god and god will give him a
miracle. With the water at about chest high, another boat comes to rescue
him, but he turns down the offer again cause "God will grant him
a miracle."
With the water at
chin high, a helicopter throws down a ladder and they tell him to get
in, mumbling with the water in his mouth, he again turns down the request
for help for the faith of God. He arrives at the gates of heaven with
broken faith and says to Peter, I thought God would grand me a miracle
and I have been let down." St. Peter chuckles and responds, "I
don't know what you're complaining about, we sent you three boats and
a helicopter."
Minister
Billy Graham
The Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he
arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a letter, he
asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him,
Dr. Graham thanked him and said, "If you'll come to the Church this
evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to Heaven."
"I don't think I'll be
there," the boy said. "You don't even know your way to the post
office."
Clara: My pastor is so good he can talk on any subject for an hour.
Sarah: That's nothing! My pastor can talk for an hour without a subject!
Divine Performance
Report
Father O'Flannagan dies due to old age. Upon entering St. Peter's gate,
there is another man in front, waiting to go into heaven. St. Peter asks
the man, "What is your name what did you accomplish during your life?".
The man responds "My name is Joe Cohen, and I was a New York city Taxi
driver for 14 years" "Very well," says St. Peter, "Here
is your silk robe and golden scepter, now you may walk in the streets of
our Lord." St. Peter looks at the Father, and asks "What is your
name and what did you accomplish?" He responds, "I'm Father O'Flannagan,
and have devoted the last 62 years to the Lord". "Very well,"
says St. Peter, "Here is your cotton robe and wooden staff, you may
enter." "Wait a minute," says O'Flannagan, "You gave
the taxi driver a silk robe and golden scepter, why did I only get a cotton
robe and wooden staff?". "Well," St. Peter replied, "We
work on a performance scale, you see while you preached, everyone slept,
when he drove taxis, everyone prayed!"
A sermon about lying
A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about
the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read
Mark 17." The
following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked
for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every
hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen
chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."
Honk
If You Love Jesus
The other day I saw a ''Honk if you love Jesus'' bumper sticker. I was feeling
particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir
performance followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker
and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did! What an uplifting experience
that followed! I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just
lost in thought about the Lord, and how good He is... and I didn't notice
that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus
because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed! I found that LOTS of
people love Jesus! Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind me started
honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, ''For
the love of GOD! GO, GO!! Jesus Christ, GO!!'' What an exuberant cheerleader
he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window
and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked
my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from
Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a ''sunny
beach''...I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger
stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage son what that meant, he said
that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I've
never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the
good luck sign back. My son burst out laughing...why even HE was enjoying
this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the
joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards
me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is
when I noticed the light had changed, so I waved one more time to my loving
brothers and sisters, grinning, and drove on through the intersection. I
noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the
light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them all
after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of
the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one more time as
I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks.
