Who was Roger Delk: A Brief Biography
Roger Delk/Dilke married his first wife Sarah in England and they had a daughter, Elizabeth born April 1622 in Middlesex, London. Roger Delk arrived from England to Virginia aboard the ship "South Hampton" in 1624. This was one of Sir Walter Raleigh's ships used on his last expedition to South America. It is most probable that his wife was to follow later, but most likely died before. In any case he shortly after his arrival he married Alice Davenport who arrived on the same boat with him. Roger was indentured to John Chew and employed in 1624 on his plantation on Hog Island. He worked out his indenture by 1626, and in 1628, Francis West, "Governor and Captaine Generall", granted him 1,000 acres on Lawne`s Creek which flows into the James River just below Hog Island. The size of this patent suggests the possibility of some influence having been exerted in his behalf.
He rose rapidly in esteem and was chosen to represent Stanley Hundred in the House of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly in the western world.
He served during the session that began on Feb. 1, 1632/33 and may have lived too above his means at Jamestown (then called "James Cittie"), while attending the assembly in 1634 for he was outlawed for debts and a capias was issued against him. He appears to have died before 1635 as Alice his wife was registering land in her name. He had one son Roger II. His Wife Alice remarried Nicholas Reynolds and had two more sons. The 1,000 acres on Lawne's Creek, granted to Roger Delk I. by Gov. Francis Westand then became due Nicholas Reynolds on 26 Aug. 1637, he having married Alice, the widow of Roger. Roger II. inherited this land when he came of age.On Aug. 23 1661: Roger Delk (II) (and his wife Rebecca) out of love & affection made a deed to his half- "brothers Francis and Robert Rennells, born of his mother Alice Gregory (wife of John Gregory) by her (2nd) husband, Nicholas Reynolds (dec.) of Lawne's Creek," for a tract of land in Surry Co.

I.
GREETINGS friends, cousins, and fellow researchers. The circulation of the Newsletter is now up to 65! The organization of the eMail communications between cousins is getting to be a full time job. To make my life a little easier I therefore ask everyone to :
a. Include your full name on all correspondences - first and last! It saves me time when I sort them into 65 files (one for each of you). I have received a few eMails with no name at all included and had to go through my eMail address book to identify the author. Please spare me that.
b. let me know what state you live in (or what state you were born - if it is different). If you are now living in Alaska but were born in Tennessee. The TN connection is what is most relevant for the mailing list. Your current address is useful so that cousins in your area can make contact more easily. I also sort some of my info by state and it makes my work more easy to send out relevant info to the right people. If you notice I include the state in the eMail address for your convenience as well; you can find cousins in your state much more easier or can be found. If your eMail address does not have a state abbreviation tacked on, it means I do not know where you live. Please provide it accordingly.

II. DELK SOLDIERS (part II continued from issue # 5):

It seems to me appropriate in these troubled times to honor our Roger Delk descendents who died for America as well as all those who have served in it's wars.

The following passage is from a sermon by
John Hageeis and is well worth repeating:

"I want you to close your eyes and picture in your mind the soldier at Valley
Forge, as he holds his musket in his bloody hands.
He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from
months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his
family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war.

He stands though, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks
at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this...

I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution and now your
children graduate too illiterate to read it.

I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at
home because it rains.

I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain
silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business.

I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has
stolen democracy from the people.

It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press.

It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech.

It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate.

It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is
draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!!!

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in
our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
Amen."

editors note: I do not support War, but I do support it's soldiers
No stone should be left unturned, even if it takes a little more
time and effort
to prevent any war, any where.

In part he said and I quote: "The Korean Veterans always did feel like they didn't receive recognition due to them." I feel honored to have contributed my artistic talent in creating and donating the Lantern that will top the monument with no end in sight. Harry Bonnici

:
Betty Sue (me) , Carlie Ann and Nellie Grace (died as an infant). All born in Jamestown, TN
I am Betty Sue Delk Williams Eldridge Born April 24, 1944 in Jamestown, TN. I never use the Betty so please refer to me as Sue. I am the daughter of Dallas Delk and Ruby Howard. Dallas was a notorious ladies man, gambler, and moon shiner. I have a living sister Carlie Ann Delk Williams Silvia and a deceased sister Nellie Grace Delk who died at age 5 months and is buried in Frogge Chapel Cemetery in Pall Mall. My parents were married but left my sister and I with relatives in Jamestown and disappeared for many months. The relatives were Thursie and Erwin Stephens, Dallas's half sister and her husband. When Thursie became ill, Erwin took us down the street to Ruby's sister, Roxy and Luther Smith. They wrote another sister, Bernice Howard Williams who came and got us and took us to Massachusetts where we were legally adopted after many attempts by Ruby to get us back. I was never allowed to use the name Delk but it always had a fascination for me.
We visited Jamestown often, on the same street that Dallas would visit his sister but he never acknowledged us in any way. When I had my children, I tried to find my mother. My sister remembered some names and with the help of an operator I found a cousin. My mother visited me twice and said that Dallas had died of alcoholism and was buried in a pauper's grave in Cincinnati, Ohio. The stories I heard were many. One about outsmarting the sheriff who tired to arrest him at his still, another about him winning a hardware store in a poker game, and one that he tired to kill the sheriff and wounded his wife instead. It was on the road down to Pall Mall. Other stories have him buddies with Sgt. York when he rode the horse into the church which I believe is Frogge Chapel. Of course, Alvin York found religion and Dallas never did. When Ruby, my biological mother died, I went to the funeral and found my Delk relatives. It was wonderful for me and wonderful for them since they never knew what happened to us. I am a special needs teacher, married to a lawyer.

We have three children, Jeff, a journalist photographer, Stephen, a lawyer and daughter Kristi, who got married last week, is a special needs teacher. I became fascinated while teaching Social Studies with the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island. English colonist disappeared without a trace and with no sign of violence. Theory has it that the Cherokee took them inland to save them and they intermarried. There are lots of English names in the Cherokee Tribe. I also saw a show many years ago about a a tribe of blond haired, blue eyed Cherokee on one of the news show., Unfortunately, I did not pay attention as it was before I had known my roots. Would anyone have any knowledge of this?

I live in Centerville, MA on Cape Cod. There does not seem to be much information on Dallas. Has anyone ever heard of him? I guess I did not get any of his bad habits but he sounds like an interesting person. I would love to here from any relatives. Sue Eldridge

I was born in Michigan, grew up in Florida, and went to college in Michigan and South Carolina, then moved to Illinois to get married. I've lived in the Chicago area ever since. After spending 39 years with United Airlines, I retired last year and have been traveling a bit (more) since. In addition to seeing my children and grandchildren more, who are spread across the country, I'm trying to spend as much time keeping my mother company as I can.

(I enjoy the research more, and she likes to do the data entry stuff more. A good compromise, I think!) Anyway, when I get it out in front of me, I'll send some of the information that I have, and then when she gets it into PAF format, I'll send that too.

I was born on October 11, 1933 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, the first daughter of Marvin and Bernice Mize Hall. At the time of my birth I had one brother deceased, and two living brothers, Darrell and Bill Hall. I have one younger brother, Jon, and two younger sisters, Sarah and Nira.

My father Marvin W. Hall was a Baptist Minister and in 1936 we moved to Logan County, Ky where he pastored Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and the Tabernacle Baptist Church. At the age of 10 I moved to Lyon County, Kentucky and I have lived all my life within a 90 mile radius of where I was born. I presently reside in Paducah, McCracken County, Ky. I retired in 1984 from my job as a paralegal due to health reasons, and since then I have worked quite hard trying to find the branches of my family tree.

I am the mother of four children, Sherry, Mike, Rob and Chris, 11 grandchildren and am expecting my 3rd great grandchild.

My Delk connection comes way back to Rebecca Delk who married George Ezell abt. 1695-1700 in Surry Va.

IV. FEATURE: The Cherokee Connection

While researching the Delk name I had read in many queries alluding that there is Cherokee Blood in the Delk lines. Though very few could document this the fact that so many different branches insisted this connection aroused my curiosity. I thought it would be interesting to delve into this "Family Myth" and try to separate the fact from the fiction. In almost every myth there is a little truth.

From our 60 subscribers only 25 bothered to answer the question about having a myth of Cherokee blood in there Delk line. I have included all responses both positive and negative, as some of the negatives had useful and relevant info. Most of the positive responses were from branches that hail from Tennessee. Other tribes mentioned were Creek & Choctaw.

Recently, a cousin of my mother disputed this stating that Dorcas was half Cherokee and that it was her mother that was the full-blooded Cherokee. The family legend was that her soon-to-be husband left town (which town?) with two horses because he was riding to the indian village (reservation?) to bring her back with him. Food for thought. Hope it helps!

Jim Delk (state?) jams0304hotmail.com : A more appropriate question would be, Does anyone have any American Indian blood line and which ancestor makes the claim and do they have a CDIB (Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood) and are/were they enrolled in any Federal Recognized Tribes. My experience has been that if "Indian Blood" is mentioned everyone has a "Cherokee Grandmother" which is usually a myth. My answer to your Cherokee question is NO.

Nancy Wilson (state?) njwilson1yahoo.com : I checked through my files and found no connection to a Delk Cherokee part of the family…I have never heard of any American Indians marrying into the Delk family. My 3rd gr-grandmother, Eda Delk, married Hyram Crabtree and that's where it splits. I hope this helped.

Jim Bridgewater (Tennessee?) Bridgy-1msn.com :
Hi!...My answer is yes and it is through Sally Delk Hughett. I do not know exactly which Delk is her father. Her son, James Pryor Hughett (a preacher), listed a Garfield Delk as her father on her death certificate and the mother's maiden name as Adkins (no first name). The family story is that Sally was adopted by a Delk family during the Trail of Tears. I have also heard a family story that we were related to Alvin C. York through her (Delk family). As far as actual written proof of her being a Cherokee - none, although my mom actually knew her and was told this about her. There are many, many family stories about her along this line and the York connection. I have been researching Gabriel Delk to see if he might be the father but have struck out because I simply can't find any info on him (such as the simple question as to who his wife was). It appears to me that there at least has to be a Delk/Adkins husband/wife connection which would narrow it down a lot. I look forward to your next newsletter as I really enjoyed the last one! - Jim

James V. Delk (state?) jvdelk37397aol.com : I know of no indian blood, cherokee or otherwise, in my direct lines back to Roger. I Think that I saw on the internet on some web site, a series of questions regarding indian blood by one of the descendants of George Washington Delk, son of Joseph Delk, in Arkansas of Oklahoma. If my memory serves me these discussions were on GenForum, and it seems that the conclusion was that one of the Delk men had married a cherokee Indian. s/JAMES V. DELK

That Concludes the results of the Cherokee question. Below are some other relevant queries that were found on-line:

Dixie Scott-Lester wrote July 05, 1998 at geneology.com :
My SARAH (DELK) HUGHETT was born about 1832-36. She died in Scott Co Tn in 1918. The father is listed on her death cert. as Garfield Delk. The reason I have inquired about one JOHN DELK is that there was a JOHN who married Nancy ADKINS. On SARAH'S death certificate her Mother is listed as (?) ADKINS. I found GARFIELD DELK on the 1840 c. All family history that I have, has been told that SARAH and a sister, NANCY, were CHEROKEE infants left behind on The Trail of Tears.
As we have pieced this together, we have found that NANCY'S first daughter was named SARAH, and SARAH'S first daughter was named NANCY. We believe the two girls were raised by 2 different 'white' families. This is a big guess at this time. NANCY'S maiden name was GOAD and she also married the brother of SARAH'S husband. SARAH m WILLIAM ALEXANDER HUGHETT-NANCY m ALLEN HUGHETT. They all lived and died in Campbell and Scott Co Tn. The latest and official date is the death of SARAH, documented with a death cert. under the name of SARAH DELK (HUGHETT). This has been a puzzle that has had many pieces. Perhaps I will find something soon.
Thank you for your speedy reply.

Fabian Doles comments : If Sarah & Nancy were really abandoned infants from the "Trail of Tears" saga this would mean that though their descendents bare the Delk surname they are not biologically related only adopted.

response July 03, 1998 : Thank you for replying. 'John' is a name that I found on an 1840 census. I have no other info on him. Somewhere in my Tn. research, the names of 'Garfield' and ? Adkins have come together. They are listed on the death cert. as the parents of Sarah, b 1832, Tn. As most of the area in Campbell and Scott Co's of Tn. records were destroyed by fires during the Civil War. Family history has always listed Sarah as Indian, probably Cherokee. I have a tin-type of Sarah and her husband, William Alexander Hughett, taken c. 1865. They had 9 children, all but one married, but all grew to be adults. I have all of the info on them. It is the parents of Sarah that have me stopped. One John did marry Nancy Adkins, but I do not know if this is the correct one for here. I do have a marriage date for these two if you need it.
Thanks again,
Dixie

response April 13, 2000: Hello, Wilma Gibson:
It has been too long since we last 'spoke'. (My PC has been bummed up for a long time and now it is fine.)
I see that there are still several questions about "Garfield" DELK. I just posted a note to one Mike about the same. Do you remember the story that we were discussing some time ago in regard to my Sarah(Sally)(DELK) HUGHETT? (b c 1840 / d April 4, 1918: buried at Brimstone TN.) Her Father is listed on her Scott Co. TN death certificate as Garfield DELK and Mother is listed only as ADKINS. Somewhere in my memory there is the name of "Sookie" DELK or something similar. Do you think this could be the Sarah that I have been looking for these past 10 years?

Hymelus Patton Cherokee Indian - Elis And Nancy Ann Delk
Hymelus had a daughter Nancy Ann who married Elis Delk the son of Johnny Delk and Sarah Williams Delk. He was born June 5, 1855 and died April 24, 1926. The Delks came from Germany. (editors note: many people in the past believed DELK to be of german origin. see Delk Newsletter #1 for more info on the German Origin Myth)

The following information was taken from:
The http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/fentress/f206.htm

Nancy Ann was the daughter of William "Billy" Patton. Billy was the son of Hymelus Patton. He was said to have been a half Cherokee Indian. The Pattons are said to have come from England. "Billy" was a soldier during the Civil War. He was born in 1811 and died in 1915. Nancy was born July 26,1855.

Elis was a farmer and Nancy was a housewife, mother and a midwife. EIis and Nancy had three children. They were Rutheford B. (R. B.) who was a merchant and sold real estate, Warden P. (W. P.) was a merchant and Sarah Jane who was a housewife and mother.

Fabian Doles comments : this would have meant that Nancy Ann Patton was 1/8 Cherokee and the children of Ellis & Nancy 1/16th Cherokee.

The Following is a documented Delk - Cherokee Indian Relationship:
taken from: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bp2000/fentress/asasmith.htm [15]

Fannie COKER / KOKER an alleged Full blooded Cherokee Indian married Asa Cobb. They had a son Jesse Cobb (
½ Cherokee) who married Janette Stephens they had a son Thomas Cobb (1/4 Cherokee) who married Sallie Crockett (descendent of the father of the famous pioneer statesman Davy Crockett's) they had a daughter Abigail Cobb (b. 22 Feb 1843 ; d. Jul 27. 1919 - 1/8th Cherokee) married Jeremiah Delk (b 12 dec 1846; d. Jul 27 1919).
Abigail was 1/8th Cherokee, her father Thomas Cobb 1/4th, her grandfather ½ Jesse, her great grandmother Fannie Coker/Koker was a full blooded Cherokee.

Jesse Cobb (½ Cherokee) had another daughter, Frances "Fanny" Cobb who married David Smith. They had a son Asa. In 1907 Asa Smith (1/8th Cherokee) applied "for such share as may be due me of the fund appropriated ... in favor of the Eastern Cherokees ... through my grandfather Jesse Cobb ... his mother was a Coker and she we a Cherokee Indian. She married a Cobb, my mother's maiden name: Fannie Cobb". Claim was disallowed as fact of descent from a person who was a party to the treaty of 1835-36 and 1846 was not established. Neither were many other Fentress County claims through Jesse Cobb and others established.

Sherwood / Sherrod Delk b.1840-44, Fentress co. TN married Genetta Jane Cobb 1/8th Cherokee. Her father Thomas Cobb 1/4th, her grandfather ½ Jesse, her great grandmother Fannie Coker/Koker full blooded Cherokee.

Florence Delk daughter of Sherwood was 1/16th Cherokee. She married David Evans 1/8th Cherokee. His mother Deborah Cobb was 1/4th Cherokee, her father Jesse Cobb was ½ Cherokee his mother Fannie Coker/Koker full blooded Cherokee. Since both parents had cherokee blood that would mean the children of this marriage were 3/32 or 1/10.66th or rounded off 1/11th Cherokee.

Jesse W. Evans was 1/8th Cherokee he married Dean G. Delk ( b. Feb. 2, 1869; d. Feb. 13, 1914). There children would have been 1/16th Cherokee. His mother Deborah Cobb was 1/4th Cherokee, her father Jesse Cobb was ½ Cherokee his mother Fannie Coker/Koker full blooded Cherokee.

I am the great grand daughter of Chestanna Delk. From my knowledge she is of Indian descent. She had 6 siblings, by the names of James, Mckinnley, Hezekiah Delk her sisters were Cora (Delk) Fleetwood, Rebecca (Delk) Johnson, And Maggie (Delk)Tynes. Her mother name was Henrietta Darden and her father was James Delk. She about 7 children. 2 died at birth. Her other children were Gladys, George, Emily, Ruth, and Hezekiah. If you feel that there is a connection please contact me at Honeygirl525hotmail.com

John Washington Delk (b. 8 Jun 1852; d. 16 Oct 1943 son of George Washington Delk & Malita Albritton) was married eight times. Supposedly his last wife was a full bloodied Cherokee squaw. I have not been able to verify this and do not know if they had children.

If you are searching for info on Native American ancestors a good site to begin with which includes listings of Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, Seminoles, and Delawares can be found at RootsWeb: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/nativeamerican/

The Dawes Commission and the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek or Seminole) was a plan of the U.S. Congress that tried to end self-government for five major American Indian tribes and assimilate them into the dominant culture through a program of "allotment." The program provided an allotment of land to each Indian that enrolled although almost two thirds were rejected between 1893-1914 when the reviewing of cases officially ended.

Children born to recognized enrolled citizens after certain dates (mostly in the early 1900s) of these various nations could be enrolled by their parents and you'll find these on the P (parent) cards. During the enrollment process, if there were any questions about a person's eligibility to be enrolled, their information was recorded on a D (doubtful) card. Many people stayed on the D cards for years while the Dawes Commission gathered enough information to make a determination on their eligibility.

DNA Testing for Native American Bloodlines http://www.familytreedna.com/description.html [16]

It is amazing how far technology has come, but like all new technology it is an expensive procedure. The tests may become more inexpensive with time (Remember how expensive the first generation of hand calculators were? Today they do much more and cost only a fraction of the price). If you really want to prove that you have Cherokee Blood you can always take a DNA test. If the test is positive you have your proof. A negative result does not mean you are not Cherokee only that the marker that appears in 70% of Native Americans is not shown. You may belong to the 30% that the marker does not cover.

Y-Chromosome - DNA Tests
Native Match - Male: ($289.00) Native Match - Male incorporates our Y-DNA test with a test for markers that are present in approximately 70% of Native American males. Native American males have 1 of 2 specific markers that can be verified with just 2 SNP tests. In some instances it is necessary to perform several SNP tests to determine if you have Native American male ancestry. Because this test is limited in volume, we currently run it once per quarter. Results are placed in our Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical 12 loci, we will inform both parties if you have both signed the FTDNA Release Form. The customer receives a Certificate & report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing detailing whether you tested positive for the markers found in most Native Americans males.

Mitochondria - mtDNA Tests
Native Match: ($289.00) Native Match for females incorporates our Maternal Match with others tests and compares your results to databases of scientific experts in this field. Your results will show your polymorphism and differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence and indicate which of the 5 major groups that settled in the Americans you are most likely to be descended from. In some instances it is necessary to perform additional tests on the DNA to determine between rare non-Native American DNA and actual Native American DNA samples. If this is necessary your results may take 10 weeks to arrive. Your results will be data based for genealogical matching if you have signed the FTDNA Release Form. A certificate and report will also be sent to you.

Combined - Y-Chromosome and MtDNA Tests
NAM+SNPY: ($149.00) this test is a combination of the Native Match - Male and the Native Match (for females) above mentioned.

Comprehensive Ancestral/ Anthropological Test
DNAWorks: ($619.00) DNAWorks is the most comprehensive DNA test available in the market for genealogy and anthropology purposes. It puts together the power of the Y-DNAPlus, mtDNA and DNAPrint, allowing you to establish a clear picture of your ancestry. Besides checking your 25 marker Y-DNA and the mtDNA for your paternal and maternal lineages respectively, it also gives you a report based on the DNAPrint analysis, which establishes in clear percentage terms your deep ancestral anthropology as to the major population groups. (e.g. Native American, East Asian, Indo-European, sub-Saharan African, etc.) Because it includes the Y-DNA, this test is only for males.

VI. AN INTERESTING TIE IN :
Alvin C. York descendent of
Pioneer Coonrad/Conrad Pile

Alvin C. York WWI hero descendent of Coonrad (Conrad) Pile, Tennessee Pioneer and "long hunter":

Most of our subscribers who either are WWI history buffs or who hail from Fentress co. Tennessee have certainly heard the name of Alvin Cullum York. And some may even have seen the Hollywood rendition of the hero's story in Sergeant York starring Gary Cooper as Alvin York.

The commemorative US Stamp
honoring Alvin York

Even Hollywood knew
a good story when they
saw one. Gary Cooper
starred as
Sergeant York

Alvin York was brought up in a mountain cabin across from York Springs in Fentress county, TN. It was a two-room log cabin with a fireplace in one room and a kitchen was in a lean-to. The porch was on the rear of the cabin. The house spoke of poverty but the home was warmed by mother's love. On summer nights the York family sat on the stoop and sang. Alvin came from a line of mountain men who could shoot with deadly accuracy.

It was from this background that he enlisted in the army in the First World War, and went to France as a sergeant with the 82nd Infantry Division.

The York Family

Sergeant Alvin Cullom York
- a WWI war hero -

On Oct 8, 1918 he single handedly killed about twenty Germans with a rifle and pistol and forced 132 others to surrender. Marshal Ferdinand Foch called his deed, "the greatest thing accomplished by any private soldier of all the armies of Europe." General John J. Pershing, in pinning upon him the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor the United States government bestows, called York, "the greatest civilian soldier of the War."

At New York he was taken from the troop-ship and given a hero's welcome. In Washington, the streets were lined with people to welcome him home. When he appeared in the gallery of the House of Representatives in Washington, the debate was stopped and the members turned to cheer him. Alvin York was offered all kinds of money from many business propositions and for a six weeks theatrical engagement and money for the rights of his story to run in certain newspapers, but he turned them all down and went back to his mother's cabin in the mountains.
He refused to capitalized on his fame. His achievements were crowded into a few months in the army of his country. Admiral Albert Gleaves, who commanded the warship convoy for the troopships, himself a Tennesseean, made a prediction which came true. He said, "The guns of Argonne and the batteries of welcome in the East were not to be compared to those to be turned loose in York's home state." The people of TN filled the depots, the streets and tabernacles to welcome him. Gifts awaited him, which ranged from a 400-acre farm, raised by public subscriptions by the rotary clubs and the newspapers, to blooded stock for it and almost every form of household furnishings that could be thought of to aid in York's comfort. It took a warehouse at the State Fair Grounds, in Nashville, to hold all the gifts.

The home which the Rotary Club presented
to Alvin York their state hero.

He was made a Colonel by the Governor of TN and appointed a member of his staff. He was elected to honorary memberships in many organizations and the nations of Europe continued to honor him. No man of the mountains had ever been given such a welcome. Home again, Alvin wanted no special deference shown to him. He lived in the mountain cabin with his mother, for she had been a great influence on him all his life.

Alvin York married his childhood sweetheart
Gracie Loretta Williams

He married Gracie Loretta Williams. When his mother was asked if she wasn't proud of Alvin, she smiled and said, "I am proud of all of them--all eight of my boys." York asked that money given to him by admirers be used to found the York Foundation to promote the education of mountain children. This was done and the York Agriculture Institute was established in 1927. It is a state-operated High School today.
Many of our subscribers wanted to know how they were related to Alvin York. To answer this we need to know that Alvin was a great-great-grandson of Conrood Pile who is buried in the same cemetery him in Wolf River Cemetery, Pall Mall, Fentress Co. Tennessee.
Many of our Roger Delk descendents who migrated to Tennessee married into several old families including Davy Crockett's (see issue #5) and Conrood/Conrad Pile's.

Coonrod grew up in the new home to which his father brought him. And, in the tradition of the famous Daniel Boone, and David Crockett who had preceded him southward from Pennsylvania, he became one of the famed "Long Hunters" -- those men who were experts at shooting a rifle.
And, around 1798, when he was about 37 years old, he picked up his flintlock rifle and set out, on foot, to explore the wilderness area to the westward. And to find a new home for himself and his family. His adventure turned out to be much more favorable to himself, however, than Boone's did. Because Fortune really smiled on him and poured out blessings on him with a lavish hand.
For one thing, he was on friendly terms with the Indians, and did not have to fight them as Boone did.
And, for another thing, he amassed a great fortune, in land and in gold, which Boone failed to do.
At the Three Forks of Wolf River, where the village of Pall Mall is now located, Coonrod found a place that was to his liking.

York in the pioneer
spirit of his forefather
Coonrod Pile

He found a spring of flowing water that was cool and clear. And, there beside the spring, he camped. He cooked his first meal on a hot stone, drank his water from a terrapin shell, and made his home, temporarily, in a cave that was directly above the spring. He carried a big batch of dry leaves into the cave to sleep on, and kept a fire burning in front of the entrance. He was all alone -- the first white man in the valley. But, it is said that he was not afraid of man or beast. However, there was one thing that he did fear -- lightning. Every time that he was away from the cave when an electrical storm approached, he would run to the cave as fast as he could. And he would stay inside it until the storm had passed on. For several years, Coonrod thought that he had settled in Kentucky.
Other white men traveling that way saw the smoke from his fire, and came and settled in the valley. The first of these were Pearson Miller, Arthur Frogge, John Riley and Moses Poor. 80% of the residents of the valley are descendants of these 5 men. For, after a while, Coonrod brought his family there. And he erected a large, well-built house of hewn logs, some of which were over 50 feet long. Coonrod built one of the rooms with no windows and with only one door. That door opened by his bedside. In this room, he kept his valuables. It served as sort of a bank for him. He had a small keg covered with skins in which he kept his gold coins. He kept his rifle by his bedside, and also a pitchfork with the prongs straightened and sharpened. He felt that he was quite capable of taking care of his life savings with these weapons.
"Coonrod Pile took up 200 acres. In the valley of the Wolf, along the Wolf River in what is now TN, but Coonrod saw his valley change from part of the State of Franklin to part of the state of KY and then to TN. Coonrod was a man of business and ran the general store in an end of his home. He traveled with the Indians as their trails led close to his house. He bought and traded in land and slaves. When Fentress County, TN was a made a county, the records show that within 18 months Conrod Pile had added, through a number of trades, over 600 acres to his already large land holdings. He was the owner of the most desirable parts of Fentress County, and court records show that the land upon which Jamestown, the county seat, now stands, was owned by Conrod. He owned timber land and had a mill.

The Pile Cabin

He built his cabin beside the spring, now called York Spring, for it was on this spot where he killed his first deer. His house was of hewn logs, large logs, some of them over 50 feet in length. He sold timber off his land and floated it down the Wolf River; he raised cotton, wheat and corn and, as Sam K. Cowan states in his book, "Sergeant York and His People," "Ol' Coonrod was ready at any time to trade with anybody for almost anything. In later years he turned to stock raising. He said that way the product could walk to market and he didn't have to boat it to market or drive it in a wagon."

John M. Clemens, the father of Mark Twain, was friend of Conrod's for they lived in the same area. Mark Twain wrote about this Fentress County area in his books, "Squire Si Hawkins," and "The Gilded Age." Another friend of Conrod's was David Crockett, the hero of the Alamo who hunted with Ol' Coonrod along the upper waters of the Cumberland. The old Crockett home still stands a few miles north of Jamestown beside the road that leads to Pall Mall. Fentress County became a no-man's land during the Civil War, subjected to marauding bands from the North and from the South, a land for plunder and revenge. The county was on the military border between the free and slaveholding states. Coonrod had been a slaveholder, but very few of the mountaineers were slave owners. Those with sympathies, for the south, went with those forces and those with northern sympathies, went with the northern forces. The men who remained home were compelled by public sentiment to take sides, and the bitterest of feelings developed. The raiding of passing soldiers was the excuse for organized raids on both sides. Bands who claimed to be "Home Guards," caused much trouble. Two of Conrod's grandsons were killed during this period, Conrod, Jr. or Rod as he was called, and Jeff, both sons of Elijah. Rod sympathized with the north and Jeff with the south. The lawlessness for years and the bitterness of the feelings of the two sided subsided slowly. Conrod Pile or Old Coonrod, as he was called by his friends and acquaintances, was on of the last of the "Long Hunters;" a very special breed of pioneer.

In just one 18-month period, he added over 600 acres to his holdings. At one time, he owned the land where Jamestown is now located. He cleared a road to there from Pall Mall. He owned several slaves, a store and a flour mill. He raised livestock, cotton, wheat, corn and various other crops of produce. Also, he made profitable deals with the Indians. For Fentress County was a part of the great hunting grounds of the Shawnee, Cherokee and Chickasaw; and one of their trails passed near Coonrod's home. When he died in 1849, he was one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Fentress County.
A lot of the wealth that Coonrod had accumulated and that his son Elijah Pile had conserved, was lost during the Civil War.

According to Pile Genealogy by Ferne Sepp, Coonrod Pile was a "long hunter". Long hunters were pioneer men who made long journeys into unexplored territory, mostly westward, hunting for game. Family stories are that Coonrod Pile and probably his older sons, Jacob and Daniel, knew David (Davy) Crockett and his family. He immigrated to Fentress Co, TN in 1791. Had a large family and amassed a fortune. Was a gun manufacturer, owned land and slaves. He built a turnpike road from Jamestown to Monroe, TN. When he died most of his estate fell to William, his 6th son, who stayed in TN and cared for him in his illness and old age.

Coonrod Pile and his wife now lie side by side in the Wolf River Cemetery at Pall Mall, with a large slab of limestone covering each grave. While in another grave, only a few yards away, lies the remains of their famous and heroic great-great-grandson -- Sergeant Alvin Cullom York.

VII. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS & QUESTIONS TO ANSWERS

I have received many questions from many people. Some I have been able to answer some not. It is my experience that when something is asked there are often other people who have asked themselves the same question but never bothered or were able to find an answer. I am therefore including all questions that I have been able to answer in this section. If you have questions you want answered post them to me and if I can't help directly, I will include them in this space. Maybe someone else has the answer or knows where to look. Many people looking at the same time for a needle in a haystack will find it quicker.

A. A couple of people asked me about Shookie Delk -daughter of John and Jemima "Nina" (nee Adkins) Delk. I have since found a related entry on-line:

Pension records of Coonrod Pile husband of Susannah "Shookie" Delk Pile. Susan Pile Affidavit for a widow's pension April 7, 1898. Susan was 82 years old and resided in Pickett Co TN. Her post office was Chanute.

Note: If someone can check to see if the name"Shookie" really appears in this document, then the mystery is solved. Susan alias Susannah alias Shookie are all the same person. If someone has seen this document or have access to these documents a confirmation would be appreciated.

B. Does anyone know the parents of Ampie Odell "Opp" Delk. I have him currently logged as child of William Pearson "Gurse" and Mary (nee Crockett) Delk, but I know this is wrong. The dates do not jive.

C. I found the following Delks at : http://www.cafes.net/jimandmarilyn/Phillips/Cemetery.htm [19]
Does anyone have any of these individuals tied into the family tree?

Information about persons buried in the Cemetery as researched by and with permission of Timothy R. and Helen C. Marsh of Shelbyville, TN in their book Cemetery Records of Bedford County and Copyrighted by Southern Historical Press Greenville, SC

The Pauline Delk b.10-28-1907 d. 11-07-1924 buried in Bedford Co. Tn you mentioned in the #6 newsletter is the daughter of James Allison Delk b.1881-1952, son of William Carrol Delk 1838-1910. Her full name is Susan Pauline and she was the sister to Mary Christine Delk,4-7-1905 and Homa Delk
8-7-1913 d.8-18-1913 and Belva Nadeen Delk 1-31-1917 d.9-18-1924

D. CROCKETT TIP: I recently discovered another good site for those who are interested in the early Crockett /De Crocketagne Includes more dates of the early lines then the sites I mentioned in the last issue: http://mer71.tripod.com/pafg46.htm#1286 - Fabian Doles

E. Jim Pekrul jpekrulchartermi.net : My grand mother is Irene Neely Delk. Her father is James Robert Delk. I have a piece of paper that Irene wrote down the birth and death date for some Delk's. One date is for Eliza Jane (Parks) Delk. The death date is 13 March 1927, I have not seen this date in all the info that I have looked at, can anyone confirm this date and a burial place?

F. Etymology (the study of the origin and history of words):
Question: What "nee" meant. It is often used before names of cousins in the Delk Newsletter.
Answer:"Nee" is french for born. In other words the name a woman had at birth before she married (maiden name). Etymology: French née, feminine of né, literally, born, past participle of naître to be born, from Latin nasci -- Other forms of this word that are used in english :
native is born of a particular place.
re·nais·sance (french for re-birth used as a term in art history to describe the rebirth of classical art).

As long as we are discussing the meaning of words let us take the word Genealogy.
Etymology: Middle English genealogie, from Middle French, from Late Latin genealogia, from Greek, from genea race, family + -logia -logy (the study or science of);
1. an account of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or from older forms
2. regular descent of a person, family, or group of organisms from a progenitor or older form Pedigree
3. the study of family pedigrees
genealogy (genea = from Greek, meaning race & logy=the study or science of). Therfore the study or science of your direct race > clan > family.

This then leads us to another interesting french word that we use in genealogy: Pedigree.
ped·i·gree Etymology: Middle English pedegru, from Middle French pie de grue crane's foot; from the shape made by the lines of a genealogical chart 1 : a register recording a line of ancestors 2 a : an ancestral line b : the origin and the history of something 3 a : a distinguished ancestry b : the recorded purity of breed of an individual or strain

X. HUMOR

Mozart Beyond the Grave

When Mozart passed away, he was buried in a churchyard. A couple days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Mozart was buried.
Terrified, the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it.

The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave. Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate.

When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, "Ah, yes, that's Mozart's Ninth Symphony, being played backwards."

He listened a while longer, and said, "There's the Eighth Symphony, and it's backwards, too. Most puzzling."

So the magistrate kept listening; "There's the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth..."

Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered in the cemetery, "My fellow citizens, there's nothing to worry about. It's just Mozart decomposing."

Safer Sex: Grandparent to Teen

A teenage boy and his grandfather go fishing one day. While fishing, the old man starts talking about how times have changed. The young man picks up on this and starts talking about the various problems and diseases going around.

Teen asks, "Grandpa, they didn't have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?"

Grandpa replies, "Nope."

Teen asks, "Well, what did you guys use for safer sex?"

Grandpa replies, "A wedding ring."
