Who was Roger Delk: A Brief Biography

Roger Delk (in some records also appears as Dilke, Delke, or Dilk) married his first wife Sarah in England and they had a daughter, Elizabeth born April 1622 in Middlesex, London. Roger Delk arrived from England to Virginia aboard the ship "South Hampton" in 1624. This was one of Sir Walter Raleigh's [5] ships used on his last expedition to South America. It is likely that his wife was to follow him later, but most likely died before. In any case, shortly after his arrival in the colony, he married Alice Davenport who had arrived on the same boat as he did.

Roger was indentured to John Chew and employed in 1624 on his plantation on Hog Island. He worked out his indenture by 1626, and in 1628, Francis West, "Governor and Captaine Generall", granted him 1,000 acres on Lawne`s Creek which flows into the James River just below Hog Island. The size of this patent suggests the possibility of some influence having been exerted in his behalf.

In a court session held at James Citye on May 7th 1627, it was ruled that Roger Dilk (by his own confession) had absented himself from his plantation without the knowledge or leave of his commander contrary to an order of Court for the space of 8 days complete, and he was fined to pay 25 pounds of tobacco for every 24 hours he was absent, totaling the sum of 200 pounds of Tobacco.

Despite this he rose rapidly in esteem and was chosen to represent "Stanley Hundred" in the House of Burgesses [6], the first legislative assembly in the western world.

He served during the session that began on Feb. 1st, 1632/33 and may have lived too high above his means at Jamestown (then called "James Cittie"), while attending the assembly in 1634 for he was outlawed for debts and a capias [7] was issued against him.

He appears to have died before 1635 as Alice his wife patented land in that year on Lawne's Creek in her own name. He had one son Roger II.

His wife Alice remarried Nicholas Reynolds and had two more sons. The 1,000 acres on Lawne's Creek, granted to Roger Delk I. by Gov. Francis Westand then became due Nicholas Reynolds on 26 Aug. 1637, he having married Alice, the widow of Roger. Roger II inherited this land when he came of age. On Aug. 23 1661: Roger Delk II (and his wife Rebecca) out of love & affection made a deed to his half-brothers Francis and Robert Rennells, born of his mother Alice Gregory (she was by then married a third time to John Gregory) by her (2nd) husband, Nicholas Reynolds (dec.) of Lawne's Creek," for a tract of land in Surry County.

I.
GREETINGS friends, cousins, and fellow researchers.

Again, I am happy to report that instead of having to find Delk cousins through tedious researching and cross referencing of names, more and more cousins are simply finding me, via the newsletter. So all the hard work is paying off!

NEW eMAIL GROUP: As we now have five people either living in Mississippi or having their Delk lineage relating to it, I have created a new Mail group for that state. One of these is an afro-american Delk. I think that many of the afro-american Delks are one time slaves of Delks that took on their master's surnames after they were freed, but there may also be some genetic connections as well. In any case I will be including afro-american Delks in the Newsletter and and database. I am interested in seeing how far back these lines can be traced. If anyone wants to be changed to this group please let me know.

Now for some sad news: a fellow researcher, Randolph Delk of Hattiesburg, Mississippi - who many of you may have corresponded with on various message boards over the years- died Sept. 10, 2004 at the ripe old age of 95. click here for obit

As I am often asked by new readers how I fit into the family tree I will, in the future include my own pedigree along with an image of myself, as well as links to my autobiography and my band's homepage.

Enjoy reading,

Correspondences: I ask you to please include your full name, first and last, on all correspondences. It saves me time when I sort them into over 130 files (one for each of you). I have received a few eMails with no name at all and had to go through my eMail address book to identify the author. Please spare me that.

Searching the Database at www.doles.org:
You may use the search feature for names of places that include "Delk" as well as cemeteries that have Delks buried in them.
Instead of typing in a surname type either "geography", or "cemetery", The info is then broken down by state or surname.

Laurie Delk Live On Stage

Laurie (Vocalist, Songwriter, Saxophonist)
I have expressed myself through music since I was a little girl when my mother and I took long drives and sang songs in the car making up lyrics as we went along. My love for music and singing grew as time passed. I became a closet singer-I literally sang in my closet because I wanted to cut loose, but I didn't want to disturb anybody. Some of my fondest memories are when I was a young girl singing alone in my bedroom with great conviction to songs like Cher's "Dark Lady," Paul McCartney's "Live and let Die," Doris Day's "Three Little Fishes" and Sammy Davis Junior's "The Candy Man." How eclectic!

Throughout my life, I have performed in numerous plays and musical theater productions. I have always enjoyed the stage. But, I have used my voice in other forums, too.

While studying Journalism and English at the University of Kentucky, I first used my voice on-air by working first at Magic 103 as a midnight to six DJ and then at public radio station WUKY where I produced my own news pieces and became one of their afternoon-drive hosts.

My first brush with comedy came during my junior year in college when I began writing and performing comedy at one of my local hangouts - Comedy on Broadway. It was my favorite release from the stress of college life.

Laurie moved to the D.C. area in mid-1999 after living and working in Japan for nine years. While settling back into American life, she began her resurgence as an entertainer in 2000 in the DC Metro area.

Throughout her life, she has won numerous entertainment competitions and performed in several plays and musicals. She also worked her way through college at the University of Kentucky partly by using her voice to perform singing telegrams and as a radio DJ for commercial station Magic 103 and public radio station WUKY.

Laurie has entertained audiences in the U.S., Bali Island and in Japan. With a powerful, melodic voice and engaging manner, Laurie's vocal and entertainment talents were in high demand while she lived abroad. While there, Laurie recorded TV commercials and voiceovers for numerous Japanese businesses including Mazda Motor Corporation.

She sang for the U.S. military for several functions and performed for her largest audiences so far at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan when she sang for several thousand at a Marine Corps Ball and at Friendship Day, an open-base event that draws a crowd of over 150,000. Laurie speaks and reads Japanese and French at a conversional level.

I have expressed myself through music since I was a little girl when my mother and I took long drives and sang songs in the car making up lyrics as we went along. My love for music and singing grew as time passed.

I became a closet singer - I literally sang in my closet because I wanted to cut loose, but I didn't want to disturb anybody. My first brush with comedy came during my junior year in college when I began writing and performing comedy at one of my local hangouts - Comedy on Broadway. It was my favorite release from the stress of college life.

I've played instruments, too. I began playing the clarinet in elementary school and the saxophone in high school. Although I play a few songs on the saxophone now, my primary focus is still singing and performance, both of which were improved tremendously by the amazingly supportive people I met during my travels abroad.

I have lived and studied in both Switzerland and England, but my longest stay abroad began in 1990 when I moved to Japan. I spent nine years there teaching English in Japanese Junior High Schools, giving speeches, doing voiceovers, copyediting, doing commercials and learning to speak Japanese.

The Japanese are the great creators of karaoke and they encouraged my singing. For that, I am eternally grateful. Taihen arigatou gozaimasu. I miss you guys so much!
I also spent some time in Bali learning from Balinese performers about stage presence and glamour. Nobody does glamour better than the performers I met in Bali! Thank you for welcoming me backstage to watch and learn while you worked your magic.

To everyone around the globe who has influenced my creativity and encouraged me to express myself, I thank you. To everyone who comes to see me perform…I hope you enjoy yourselves and leave feeling uplifted.

editor's note: I found Laurie Delk at an ELK site while researching for issue #11 Delk's involved in CHARITYS, FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS & (SECRET)SOCIETIES. By cross referencing her info I also found a web site with Laurie's mom, Claudette Evon Delk, who is a french teacher at Western Hills High School

Correspondence: We own land that M. H. Delk bought from the other side of my family (Barlow). The barlow's married into this land in 1860's.
I am long on info and short on documentation. There is an out of print book about Surry co. that has good info. It seems that the Delks spread out down route 617 from Bacons castle(Surry) to Delk's Crossroads. This lasted through the last Roger and part of Solomon's life. It seems that they gravitated down the blackwater river from "Huniford's Ferry" on rt 617 down to Rattlesnake Swamp and Blackwater river area. This is near Mill Swamp Church area.
The new part of Moreland's house is still standing, His will states that he left each one of his sons and Patsy (Wiley's widow) a farm. Until recently the home of Patsy was still standing (it has ben removed and rebuilt).
Fortunes reversed, as they do in rural America, and by the time of civil wars end Masolum was living in an existing house on a hidden farm across from one of our farms. There is reference to Delk's Swamp and a later Wiley Delk lived at the other end of this swamp (house still standing). There is a cemetery just inside of Surry with Delk's and a cemetery at a Delk home just up the road from me (which I have not seen).
Masolum served in CSA Surry light artillery (book by Ben Bell), Masolum H. was a hard scrabble farmer and Howard E. served in WWII. I own the home farm and am the first in the family to not be a full time farmer (although I have cows and am getting in debt like a farmer).
My sister was in the DAR, based on documentation. I named my son Dawson Roger after William Dawson Delk and Roger Delk. There are three direct male descendant of Masloum Howard (Scottle) and four grandsons. Only one in Isle of Wight co., Virginia.
We are located 7 miles northwest of Smithfield, Virginia., near the Surry co. line. These assorted ramblings should prove more entertaining than informative.... and now back to work!

I am Edward R. Harmon; I am doing research for the Abraham Jones ( born abt. 1720 in Scotland) family and related families. My mother started the process about twenty five years ago, unfortunately she died two years ago, without putting much of her information onto a computer. I am trying to place the information into a computerized format, using Family Tree Maker. I now have over 2,600 individuals entered at 18 or 19 generations. Our family has a long history of service to the nation as soldiers, sailors and airmen. So far, I have identified three Revolutionary war soldiers, four from the war of 1812, including one US Navy veteran, and almost two pages of confederate army veterans. Many males of the family also served in the SE states during the Indian wars as soldiers.

Gideon Delk and family

Gideon Delk and family
I live in Destin, Florida and my first Delk relative to move from Georgia to Florida was Gideon Jones. Gideon was the Grandson of Nancy Delk and James Brown Jones Sr.

Gideon was a soldier during the American "Civil War" or as we call it, more accurately, The War of Northern Aggression. Gideon was a member of Company K, 4th Georgia Calvary, CSA. His brothers, Jesse, Nathaniel, James and Edward were also CSA soldiers. Jesse was killed on 7/9/1863 in Virginia and Nathaniel did not return from the war.

When Gideon returned home he found that his wife, Laney Thrift, had died, leaving him with two young children and no wife.

Shortly after the war (1865 - 1866) Gideon moved from Georgia to North Florida where he met Martha Jane Quiett Hunter, a widow who's husband, Thomas Hunter, did not return from the war. Martha had two children and no husband. Gideon and Martha married, about 1866, and had 8 more children. Enclosed is a photo of Gideon and Martha with daughter Pollyanne taken in 1868.
I am working on the following surnames: Jones, Barker, Davis, Hart, Jordan, Quiett, Dixon, Brown, McDonald, Knox, Mizell

I own and insurance agency. I also own 4 other corporations involved in optics importing, wood sales, aviation insurance and gifts. I am the past president of the local Rotary Club, founder of a fire department/district, a water and sewer district, a scholarship foundation and several other community service organizations. I served 18 years as an elected public official in the state of Florida. I am married to the former Venica Lea Ellison and we have two children, a son and a daughter. Daughter served in Desert Storm in the USAF and the son is currently a Lt. in the USAF. I served in the 101st Airborne Division from 1964 through 1967.

Thank you and your brother for your donated time and your effort.

Greetings Fabian,
Thanks so much for your letter, nice hearing from you. I have spent 5 years researching my family's heritage and ancestry. Yes, I would love to get your newsletters, and I would love to link your web site to mine if you don't mind.
Biographical info: My husband and I are both retired. My husband retired with 26 years of service with CSX Rail Road in Tampa Bay Area. We travel a lot and we do go to church at abundant life church of god in Lakeland Florida. We don't have any pets. I spend a lot of time on the computer doing ancestry and I have joined the Red Hat Lady association. Wow what a life right, but we have the best of fun finding new friends and eating out. As for school I went to La-Belle High school in Labelle Florida and my husband graduated at White wood High School in Buchanan Co, Virginia, and spent 4 years in the Army as a crypto operator. He then worked 10 years with Ford motor company and now we live in Plant City, Florida enjoying our lives in retirement.

Monica's Quilt
For the names of all of those pictured above see details below. Note: due to the printing method the images on the quilt appear mirrored.

It is through my Grandmother Lelia Herrin Tillman that I connect in to the Delk family. My mother was her 4th child.

There are some Delks buried at the Guest Mill Pond Cemetery in Homerville Clinch County, Georgia including my Ggrandmother Candancy LeNora Delk Herrin.

I also have done quilts of my Herrin family. As for the quilt (image left), Candancy is the only born Delk on the quilt and appears twice. First she appears on the second picture on the top row. That picture was taken when she was young. The third image on the same row is her again just before she died in 1917. She is holding Nancy Eva Herrin. (see details below)

Wow its so nice to hear from ones family around the world!

I have visited your web site and find it most interesting. I live in Ohio but at the moment I'm visiting my other home here in Spring Hill Florida. I will be back in Ohio next Sunday and plan to delve into your web site more thoroughly. Looks like you've been very busy digging into genealogy.

I especially found your Cherokee connection most interesting. Many people back then did not recognize their Indian blood line as it wasn't the best thing for them, so when someone says they're on 1/64 they may in fact be much more. If you were to look at some of the photos of our relatives you would see the blood line is very dominate. I have folks who look like they just stepped off the reservation and yet they will not even discuss the fact that they are Native American by descent!

Fabian, I am the son of Ernest Evans (born Dennis Farmer) and Erma Lee (born Irma Lee)
Will Farmer was the son of Craton Evans and changed his name to Will Farmer from Evans. My dad was born as Dennis Farmer but changed his name back to Evans and took the name Ernest as his given name. There are many stories about why the name changes but I trust my dad's version.

His grandfather Craton was sent to prison for killing someone. To avoid retribution Will Evans changed his name to Will Farmer. Will was found dead in a coal mine apparently shot in the head. My dad's aunts Millie and Sarah (Nancy Jane Delk's sisters) saw the head wound. I do not know the name of the family in question that shot my grandfather.

My dad changed his name back to Evans after he married my mother Erma Lee. They moved out of that part of Kentucky and came to Ohio where I was born in 1939.

I have an older sister who you do not have listed. Her name is Lillian Marguerite Evans. She married Joseph Jablonski She is between my brother James Charles and me William Stanley Evans.

I have two younger brothers. David Lee Evans born 1944 and another brother Steven Alexander Evans born in 1948. These dates may be wrong. I am not at my computer in Ohio where I have all my information.

My father had two and possibly three sisters. He had a sister Mary and a sister Nancy. There is another half sister by another man after the death of Will Farmer. Her name was Heather but I don't know what ever became of her. He father is said to be Enoch Staley Hull but I have not been able to prove that. Enoch was the uncle of Cordell Hull of Roosevelt's cabinet.

Mary was married to an Oddie Shoupe and Nancy was married to William Paul. He (William Paul) is connected to the York family through his mother Charity York. My information is scanty because like I said all my info is back home in Ohio. I will be going back there next Sunday so after that I can give you better information.

As far as my siblings go Elizabeth was born with the surname Farmer and all the rest were born with the name Evans.

I have tried to get information on Craton Evans who supposedly died in prison in Brushy Mountain prison Tennessee but the state of Tennessee has not been helpful. They made me wait a full year for any information and then in the end they just refused to tell me anything.

Your cuzzin, Bill Evans

IV. Cemeteries where Delks & Roger Delks descendants are buried

In addition to names and dates cemetery inscriptions and markers can provide researchers with clues to family relationships (spouse of, parent of , child of, etc. ). Epitaphs can range from sentimental to humorous and may reveal a persons interest or religious fervor.
The cemetery itself, if affiliated with a particular church, may provide evidence of their religious affiliations.
Decorative elements included on markers often include symbolic devices of particular interest to genealogists. These symbols can provide useful information such as: military service, membership in an organizations or club. Symbols pertaining to the deceased's hobbies, occupation, or even cause of death are also not uncommon.

VIRGINIA

Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia
Elmwood Cemetery was established in 1853. By 1850 it was clear that burial lots in Cedar Grove Cemetery would soon be sold out and there was a need for more city cemetery space. John and Rebecca Tunis sold the City of Norfolk a tract of land known as Farmingdale for the creation of the new cemetery. In 1852 a local paper published a request for proposals to build a brick wall enclosing the new cemetery. Located due north of Cedar Grove Cemetery but separated by an arm of Town Back Creek, the two cemeteries were originally connected by a bridge. The creek and surrounding marshes were eventually filed in, expanding burial space and allowing the extension of the "Road to Princess Anne" which now separates the two cemeteries. Burial records are located in the Elmwood Cemetery Office. By Tim Bonney; Photos by Donna Bluemink.

V. BLACK SHEEP:

Every family has a few "black sheep". Sometimes they are so shunned from the family that they are no longer even claimed as kin. This can make researching difficult. To qualify for the Black Sheep section an ancestor must have committed any one of the following crimes:
Murder - Kidnapping - Armed Robbery - Treason - Theft particularly of any item of fame - Membership in a famous Gang - Political Assassin
(documented) - Member of the FBI's Most Wanted List - Political Expatriate - Extreme Public Embarrassment - Involvement in Witchcraft Trials - Bigamy (outside the Mormon faith, which condoned it at one time) - Persons expelled from normal society - Convicted felons (documented) - Incest (very difficult for some to talk about) - Known Pirate
(note: this list is similar to the criteria for members of (IBSSG) The International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists )

Hilltop Tracks a Tale of Death and Greed:
The Story of Delk's Cliff, Madison co. North Carolina
by Bob Burnette

Originally printed in The Hilltop The Student Newspaper of Mars Hill College and reproduced here with the kind permission of the author Bob Burnette

Picture yourself on the run from the law in the early 1800's. There is no place to hide from your fate but in the dense woods. In the rugged terrain, only the cliffs bring you shelter. Many are looking for you for a cash reward, dead or alive. One man you trust brings you food.

This sets the stage for a famous tale from Madison County, North Carolina during the early 1800's. The man's name is Jordan Delk, which gives the name Delk's Cliff to a Madison County landmark. Our local historian Bruce Phillips once again has brought a story.

Bruce Phillips - local historian

Bruce Phillips
local historian

"He (Delk) bought a piece of land down this side of Petersburg from a man. He didn't bother to check out what had gone on in the courthouse in Asheville. He just bought it. He bought this place, and he found out that the guy had already sold it to somebody else, and he sold it to Delk a second time. And Delk went down to see him about it - I guess you could say that - and saw him all right. And he climbed up in the window. The man was sitting there in a chair rocking a baby. And Delk put a rifle ball through his head "

Ivy River

The Bend of Ivy River,
green and cold
"He took off. A lot of you know that when you do something bad enough, the first thing you do is run. Well he ran! And he wound up in this cave over on Ivy River, way up in the cliffs. He hid out in a cave. And the law would look for him and look for him. And they put a price on his head -- a $100 reward. Now in 1810, $100 would get anybody. There's lots of people would kill you for $100. I mean if they didn't really mind shooting somebody too bad. But Delk stayed in that cave."

"And there was this man down at the mouth of White Oak, and he came up there every day and brought food to Delk, so he could stay in the cave, stay out of sight, so nobody would see him. But somebody went around, put up some posters around that put $100 on Delk. So the next time this old boy went up there to feed him, took his food to him. I guess Delk trusted him by then. So he sat out on a rock and started eating. And the guy pulled out a pistol, shot him in the head, and killed him."

"He hooked a mule to him and drug him back down off of that ridge and put him in an old shed. The guy kept an old store down there. And upstairs he had some big boxes where they salted down meat. So he put Delk in one of those boxes, covered him up with salt, so he could have kept him as long as he wanted to."

And sent word to the sheriff, who I think - his name was Huey. It may be James. But his last name was Huey. He sold land for some people around here, for the government. He sent the sheriff word now that if he could get the $100 in cash, which meant hard money, bring it to me, and I'll give you your man. And the sheriff did. Paid $100 for a dead body."

"When that man got older - the one who had shot Delk and collected the reward - when he got older and his time came (It looked like he was going to die, as a matter of fact): and he was laying in bed with his sons and his family around him; and it was at night; and all of a sudden he screamed and pointed at the door; and he said, '. . . .'"

Note: From this point on Bruce Phillips swore us to secrecy because, he said, the man still has relatives in Madison County who even 200 years after the event might take issue with public release of an unauthorized version of the last minutes of their ancestor's life. . . even though the story was, Phillips said, "too good to keep hidden much longer."

"They say," Phillips continued, "that where Delk stayed and kept a fire, there are still marks above on the rocks that show the blackness of where the flames hit to show where he stayed."

As we heard this story, we felt that we must visit Delk's Cliff and find exactly where all this happened. Phillips himself had done a college thesis on this story but had never actually explored the cliff and found the spot.

We meet Phillips in Mars Hill at The Country Hub Chevron Station, which he owns, and follow his SUV west on 213, then south on Bull Creek road until we come to a turnoff called Delis Cliff Lane. Phillips comments on how names change over time.

As we drive up the road we notice how a few housing developments have started even way out here. It's rough terrain grown up in small trees, and Phillips recalls when it was cut over and grown up in briars. He says folks then called it "Scratch Ankle Road", due to all the ticks and thorns.

At the end of the pavement we ponder exactly which way we should take through the woods as two roads emerge. As the poem states, we take "the one less traveled" and drive through very thick woods to the end of the track, where a weathered blue tarp marks, perhaps, a hunters camp.

cliff

Phillips rummages a rope out of the car and warns, "Don't know if you'll need that, but there's a big drop out there. One step off of that and you're not coming back." Phillips wants to go with us, but he suffers from a bad back. As we start the descent down the cliff, I can see why he opts for looking for 'sang (ginseng) around the car. Looking down from the top is like leaning out of an airplane. Even the game trail around the cliff goes nearly straight down, and there's not much to catch you if you were to fall.

From the bottom it is a magnificent sight to look up from the banks of the Ivy River to see the entire massive cliff. The water is clear and deep and the landscape green and bright. As you look up on the cliff, you realize that there are any number of possible places in which Delk could have stayed.

We decide to cross the river to the other side to get a better view, and we realize the depth of the water. In some parts it comes up to chest level. I take a spill and find out exactly how cold it is! It can't have changed much since Phillips fished there years ago.

We notice up on the rocks there is an ancient chestnut board that serves as a walkway to cross over a gap that leads up to the giant cliff, but we do not have the time or the gear to thoroughly explore further.

As we make the long hike back up the mountain, I want to know more about what transpired among those rocks. Once we get back, Phillips is eager to know what we have seen and done in the two hours we have been gone. We describe it to him in detail, but the search for Delk's hideout with the smoke-blackened ceiling remains a goal for another expedition.

Before we leave the area, we follow Delis Cliff (aka Scratch Ankle) Lane to its end and find a very new house surrounded by pastureland. A friendly young lady approaches to see if we need any help. We explain our mission.

Although her house is almost directly above the cliff where fugitive killer Jordan Delk died, and though it is probably not far from where his killer died screaming at the prospect of his own demise, the young lady knows not of what happened there. Maybe from somewhere Delk's ghost is looking down (or up) trying to keep it that way.

Note: Just as we finalized this story for The Hilltop, we got a call from Bruce Phillips telling us that he had found out exactly where the spot was. He received information from a relative of Delk's killer that we were in the right location but wrong spot. We need to travel a little upstream to the actual spot, so part two will be coming soon.

The Delks in the following articles do not officially qualify as a black sheep, but in my book drunk drivers who endanger the lives of others are criminals (possibly mentally disturbed ones- but killers none the less). I have since learned that the Steve(n) C. Delk in the story below is an afro-american.

Police tie alcohol to school bus crash
Bethlehem-- Vehicle had girl, 5, as passenger; driver faces DWI charge

By BRENDAN LYONS, Staff writer
First published: Thursday, August 19, 2004

A school bus driver's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit when his vehicle careened off a town road last week with a 5-year-old girl inside, according to police and court records. The crash took place at 12:30 p.m. Friday on a curve along Bridge Street near Pictuay Road in South Bethlehem. The girl, whose name was not released, was buckled in a child-safety seat and was not injured, police said.

Town police officers who responded said they detected an odor of alcohol coming from the driver, 44-year-old Steven C. Delk of 243 Union St., Schenectady, (New York).

Delk failed a field sobriety exam, and officers gave him a Breathalyzer test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.22 percent. The widely known legal limit is 0.08 percent for the general motoring public. But on-duty school bus drivers are held to an even higher standard and a much lower legal limit of 0.02 percent, authorities said.

Delk was driving a 1992 Dodge minivan for Northland Transportation Inc. in Scotia. A spokesman for the company did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

It's not clear what school the Selkirk girl was attending. She was evaluated at the scene by paramedics and turned over to her mother, police said.

"He stated to officers that he was coming from Albany," said Bethlehem police Lt. Thomas Heffernan.

State motor vehicle records indicate Delk has a clean driving history and is qualified to drive a school vehicle.

The bus was equipped with six child-safety seats, but authorities said they are not sure how many other children Delk may have transported that morning.

Delk is being held at Albany County jail on $5,000 bail. He was charged with felony driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, and ticketed for several motor vehicle infractions, police said. State law makes it a felony to operate a school bus while intoxicated.

The crash took place when Delk failed to reduce his speed at a curve and the van slid off the road and struck a tree, police said.

In 1998, Northland Transportation, which provides bus services for several area school districts, was fined $2,500 by the state Department of Motor Vehicles for allowing a driver to operate a school bus while intoxicated. The fine stemmed from a 1996 incident in Colonie.

Under state law, bus owners are responsible for ensuring that drivers are not intoxicated and do not show signs of intoxication before allowing them to go on their routes. source [95]

VI. MAJOR NORTH AMERICAN EPIDEMICS

Imagine living in America sometime between in the late16th and 18th century, when infectious disease and epidemics were common and survival depended solely on a person's natural resistance. Imagine not even knowing that tiny, unseen bacteria and viruses exist that cause infectious human diseases such as small pox, cholera, rabies, diphtheria, typhoid, tuberculosis as well as many others.
Often the actual cause of death of many of our ancestors remain unknown to us, but should one notice many deaths within a family in a short period of time, an epidemic may have been the cause. Here a list of the larger epidemics that have struck America.

Delk was five hours into her shift when she came across the fatal candy in an inspection, according to her supervisor, Tom Graffanino.

"Apparently, Shannon had pulled the abnormal clump from the conveyor so that it didn't cause any problems down in packaging. Then, for whatever reason, she put the golf-ball sized fragment in her mouth and she was gone within minutes," commented Graffanino.

According to coroner's reports, Delk died from a sudden, intense burst of carbon dioxide that ruptured the hard palette of her mouth and caused trauma to the medulla oblongata, which produced the fatal reaction within a minute.

Pop Rocks® are manufactured by taking crystallized candy and compressing it with carbon dioxide at a rate of 600 PSI. The result is small bubbles that form along the surface of the candy, which make the patented crackle upon ingestion.

Pop Rocks® lovers should not fear, though. According to Herbert Klein, a physics professor from Pennsylvania State University, they are usually harmless.

"The compressing rate of 600 PSI is standard in all of the individual candies in a Pop Rocks® package. Ingesting the small pieces will produce the expected fizzing and crackling associated with the product. However, the sheer size of Delk's piece proved to be lethal, allowing little space in her mouth for the carbon dioxide to escape and therefore causing the palette rupture," said Klein.

The Pop Rocks® corporation has sent its condolences to Delk's parents, and in light of the accident, has stopped plans to debut their fall product line of "Pop Boulders" that coincidentally were about the same size as Delk's lethal candy piece. source [104]

Troy: 11.09.04
I will send you pictures from both couples and the information to go with them. Unfortunately and tragically, on the following day after I wrote to you, the wife of our younger son died. I'll give you all this as soon as I can get the photos to e-mail.
Troy

Fabian:
I accidentally deleted the original mail I sent to Troy Fore after that but I wrote back saying how sorry I was to hear about the death of Pattie, his son's wife, and that there was no hurry and to take all the time he needed in his time of grief. Troy did manage to send the information on Oct 18. 2004 before the deadline of this issue.

Thanks again Troy and I am sure "the extended family" feels for you and your "immediate family" for your loss.

Judge orders child returned to foster parents
Staff Report Daytona Beach Florida, News Journal-
October 27, 2004

The fight for a 3-year-old foster child is closer to an end after a judge ruled the child be returned to his foster parents.
Circuit Judge Shawn Briese today overturned his previous decision and called for Christian to be returned to an Orange City couple, Denise and Ivar Baklid.
Christian has been with his second cousins, Tiffany and Jeff Delk, in Tennessee since June 2003.
He previously lived with the Baklids for 16 months. Both families are seeking to adopt the child. The Baklids have spent the past year appealing Briese’s 2003 decision. The 5th District Court of Appeal ordered Briese to hold a new hearing.
The state Department of Children & Families, which supports Christian living with his second cousin, has 30 days to appeal today’s decision. source [108]

Scholarships Established in Honor of Local Man
May 21, 2004
Indiana University East and Dunn Center announced today that five new scholarships will be awarded in honor of Bill Delk, Dunn Center board member emeritus.
Two nursing and three social work scholarships will be established under Delk's name in the amount of $1,000 each. The gift, given by the Dunn Center, will honor the board member emeritus for his continued support of those afflicted with mental illness.
"We appreciate all that Mr. Delk has done and continues to do to educate the public and serve in the capacity of Board Member emeritus." said Dick Edwards, past CEO. "He has used his influence in the community as an opportunity to advocate for those with mental illness."
Delk, who owned a car wash business, always hired those afflicted with mental illness giving them opportunities when possible. He has also worked hard to educate individuals that don't understand the struggles that are faced by those with mental illness.
"These efforts are uncommon and commendable from such a man within our community," said Susan Markley, chief of marketing and quality development.
IU East is grateful for the opportunity to assist in recognizing Delk for his contributions to the community. "This generous gift is a wonderful testimony to the philanthropic support Bill has given to the Dunn Center," said David J. Fulton. "Naming a scholarship in his honor further demonstrates yet another influence he will have in this community-inspiring students."
Fulton added, "We thank Dunn Center for allowing the IU East Social Work Department and the IU School of Nursing East Campus to be a part of this celebratory occasion."
After beginning his tenure on the board of Dunn Center in 1992, Delk was named Vice President/President-elect and Chair of the Corporate Affairs Committee one year later. He has been an advocate for over 20 years with the Mental Health Association. He has also been an advocate for the mentally ill and a volunteer at Richmond State Hospital for many years.
Scholarships are available for the fall 2004 semester and will be awarded to bachelor degree-seeking students in the schools of social work or nursing. Individuals interested in applying should contact the IU East Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at 765-973-8208. source [110]

After doing an on-line search I could find none involved directly in the Olympics, but I was able to find a lot of Delks involved in Sports & Athletics. Almost none of these have been identified as kin. Any info that would help identify any of these individuals as kin would be appreciated.

Casey County students apply skills, knowledge to win outhouse race
By Mary Ann Scott, Cabinet for Workforce Development

Casey County Area Technology Center students labored for a month on a project that combined mechanics, construction, physics and art, all in a team effort to win a prize.

No, it wasn’t a Nobel Prize … it was Penn’s Great American Outhouse Blowout in Gravel Switch, a town situated near the Boyle/Casey County line.

A first-time entrant, the Casey County students’ “Kentucky Tech Express” outhouse-on-wheels won the 300-foot race in a double elimination process, defeating five other teams.

Team "Kentucky Tech Express"

Photo: Team "Kentucky Tech Express" members were: Andrew Clements (runner) and April Bryant (rider), both kneeling; back row l.-r., Grant Szczotka (runner), Walter Pittman (runner), Rex Delk (alternate runner) and Jake
Davis (team captain).

The outhouse set on three bicycle tires with poles mounted on the front and back of the housing. It was well equipped, according to Mike True, electrical instructor at the Casey County ATC.

“We had a strobe light on top, a CD player with a soundtrack of screeching tires and the roar of turbo charged engines blasting from four speakers and a solar panel on the roof to keep the outhouse’s battery charged,” said True. “It took creativity and problem solving.”

While remote controls triggered rocket igniters that set off smoke bombs from the tailpipe, a computer fan was installed in the exhaust system to ensure the proper amount of colored smolder poured from the tailpipe.

Besides True, Casey County ATC teachers Greg Lawhorn, welding instructor, Darrell Barlow, automotive instructor, and David Smithers, horticulture instructor, were also instrumental in the project.

Approximately 200 students studying mechanics, agriculture, welding, horticulture and electricity played roles in the design and construction of the Express.

Casey County Middle School math and science teachers and several of the high school’s physics students analyzed momentum and acceleration by charting performance curves of different sets of runners who would race the outhouse.

The high school art class outfitted the outhouse with a license plate, flag and banner.

Smithers said the experience was galvanizing. “After they won, a more proud group I’ve never seen. We’re already thinking ahead … we’ll work up models for wind tunnels next year,” noted Smithers.

True said the endeavor was an important instruction and research tool for all involved. “This was a great project for everybody. Afterward, the students said they really understood the principles we’ve been trying to teach them,” True said.

Casey County ATC is one of 53 area technology centers, administered by the Cabinet for Workforce Development’s Department for Technical Education.

Boys’ track team remains undefeated
By Chantale Odegbo

The undefeated Boy’s track team is cruising along with its winning 9-0 record.
“We gotta bust our butts to win the state championship,” said track team junior Jerome Delk, a sprinter for the team. “The team has heart and the desire to win.”“We have a strong team, and we have what it takes to win anything we put our minds to,” said junior Fabian McIntosh, who recently broke the Oakland County indoor 4 X 4 record.
McIntosh says that their coach, William Howard, puts a lot of pressure on them to be the best and the pressure has worked to their advantage this year. He also schedules long and frequent practices.
Last year the Boys’ Track Team finished first in the league, city, and the county. They placed second at regionals, then lost to Detroit Mumford High School at States.
One of the team’s strongest components is its 4 X 400 relay team of senior Phillip Burkes, juniors Ross Weaver and Fabian McIntosh, and sophomore Derrick Hunter. They also have a returning champion in junior Gerald Gersham.
As for the Girls’ track team, they won regionals and county championships last year but have a struggling 3-6 record so far this year. “We had a rocky start and have also had a lot of injured people,” said junior long jumper Angela Norman. “In spite of that, we stay focused.” source [117]

Aleigha Williams: “I’ll always remember that senior year pep rally when a group of boys from The Class of 2005 dressed up as cheerleaders. It was Jerome Delk, Ryan Yabuku, Walter Stargehill and Ross Weaver. They wore white T-shirts and cheerleading skirts and did stunts with the cheerleaders. It was so funny, and it helped the cheerleaders and me to have fun for the rest of the rally.” source [118]

Junior Ronnie Delk dropped his first match last season and allowed Zack Esposito, then a freshman, a chance to start. Esposito never looked back and Delk finished the season with a 1-4 dual record. "Sometimes when you step back and take time to really study wrestling, you really mature," Branch said. "And that's what we are looking for . . . that mental maturity"

Delk wrestled as a starter his freshman season and compiled a 19-13 record.

"He really had some outstanding performances as a freshman," Branch said. "He was just really inconsistent."

Delk earned the starting position this season by, as Branch puts it, "taking care of business" against junior Clark Shouse in the ranking matches. source [124]

Wrestling: Five of a Kind

Date: Oct 21, 2004

STILLWATER, Okla. (http://www.okstate.com) – Oklahoma State will be gunning for its third consecutive national title when they take the mat to start the 2004-05 season. For five Cowboy seniors it will be their final year to compete as a collegian.

Chris Pendleton and Ronnie Delk are the two returning starters from last year. Pendleton will be favored to win the national championship at 174 after capturing his first title last season.

Delk was the starter at the 141-pound weight class as a junior during the 2003-04 season. He has high expectations for his senior year and expects to get on the podium at the NCAA Championships.

"I have never been able to get over that hump and make it to nationals," Delk said. "I know that I am going to make it to nationals this year, and do well when I get there. I feel that I am going to All-American this year.?" For guys like Brett Munson, Clark Shouse and Mike Christian, they will have to spend the season as a backup. All three of them happen to wrestle in the same weight class as a returning All-American ... read more.

Don’t be surprised if Hampden-Sydney still runs the table without quarterback J. D. Ricca.
Sophomore Brett Delk will step in for the all-American who will miss the rest of the year with a thumb injury. The Tigers can rely on all-time leading scorer CW Clemmons, a 230-pound bruising runner, and a short passing game while easing Delk into his role Saturday at home against winless Catholic.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY - Sophomore Brett Delk made his first collegiate start in place of injured All-America quarterback J. D. Ricca, completing 12 of 21 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown.

This year's class for South Carolina was ranked ninth in the nation and features 14 players including nine players from the state of South Carolina. This year's class combines seven high school signees along with seven junior college signees with six players previously selected in the MLB Draft.

The last eight recruiting classes at South Carolina have all been ranked in the Top 25. Craig Delk
Delk steps down as East baseball coach

By Michael Compton, mcomptonbgdailynews.com -- 270-783-3247
Daily News · 813 College St. · PO Box 90012 · Bowling Green, KY · 42102 · 270-781-1700

The Warren East baseball team is looking for a new coach to replace former coach Craig Delk, who has taken an assistant position at Franklin-Simpson. Delk replaces longtime Franklin assistant Johnny Vance, who left to take the head coaching position at Barren County late last month.
“It wasn’t a situation where I was trying to leave Warren East,” Delk said. “It was just a situation where an opportunity came for me to take a better teaching position and be an assistant under a hall-of-fame coach (Greg Shelton). I thought it was a good opportunity and a difficult decision.”
Delk spent four years at Warren East. Under Delk, the Raiders won 18 games in his first two seasons, but finished 30-26 the last two seasons. The Raiders were 18-13 last season, winning the District 14 championship for the first time since 1988. Warren East advanced to the Fourth Region semifinals, losing 4-1 to eventual champion Glasgow. Delk informed his team of his decision earlier this week.
“One of the hardest decisions I made was having to tell those returning players that I was leaving,” Delk said. “They gave me everything that they had. They worked hard for me. They obviously got a lot of ability. I don’t want this to set them back. I want them to keep moving forward and be as successful as I know they can be.”
Delk said the decision ultimately came down to the chance to return home.
“That’s obviously where my family is from, so that’s where the ties come in,” he said. “My experience at Franklin was a wonderful one. The town is supportive of all athletics, especially baseball. I know what the community can do and what they are willing to do to support their sports program. I’m excited to be back there and be part of that.”
Shelton said he is excited about the chance to add Delk to his staff.
“I’ve always been very fond of Craig,” Shelton said. “He played for me here and I could see quickly that with the things he was doing at Warren East, he was going to be a very good coach.
“We’ve talked off and on several times the last few years and I expressed to him that if things ever worked out, I’d like to get him down here and maybe eventually take this program over, because I felt like he’d do a really good job of continuing what we have going on here.”
While Delk said he would like that chance at leading the program, his immediate concern is with his assistant coaching duties.
“Right now I’m just going to go down there and see where I fit in and learn from a veteran coach,” he said. “I’m just going to take it one season at a time and if Franklin-Simpson decides to hire me as a head coach, then I’d be honored to be it.” source [141]

Delk leaves Warren East for assistant spot at F-S
Franklin Favorite, Thursday, August 05, 2004

Craig Delk, who lifted Warren East’s baseball program out of the cellar, has been hired as an assistant coach at Franklin-Simpson.
Delk will replace Johnny Vance, who left F-S after 13 seasons to head up Barren County’s baseball program. Delk will assist longtime Wildcat head coach Greg Shelton, who has compiled an impressive 678-315-2 record over 29 seasons.
“He’s (Delk) a good person and a good coach. He’s obviously a great teacher, and he will bring some youthful energy to our program,” said Shelton. “And when I decide to leave, there will be someone to take my place.”
A graduate of F-S High and Murray State University, Delk was the head coach at Warren East High for four seasons, leading the Raiders to their first District 14 championship since 1988. His 2004 squad went 18-13 and lost to Glasgow in the Fourth Region semifinals.
Delk started three seasons for Shelton and hit .365 as a senior, .374 as a junior and .294 as a sophomore. He went on to set several school hitting records at Murray State.
During his first two years at the helm of Warren East, Delk won a total of 18 games. He went 30-26 the last two, ripping the 14th District Tournament title out of the clutches of Warren Central, Bowling Green and Greenwood.

....Shelton meanwhile solved a lot of his problem by getting Craig Delk, one of the hottest young coaches in the region, to give up being head coach at Warren East to come home to F-S to be his assistant.
Delk's East team beat Russellville in the regional tournament this year. Many of the Raiders are playing for the Kentucky Colonels this summer.
The lure of F-S baseball is so strong that Delk was willing to become an assistant. Of course, he also is first in line for the head coaching job if and when the namesake of Greg Shelton Field ever decides to retire.
"I'm happy with what I'm doing. I don't see any reason to retire from baseball any time soon," Shelton tells the N-D&L. ...read entire story

After 29 years, Shelton leaving F-S baseball job
Franklin Favorie -
Thursday, August 12, 2004

(excerpt)....“I feel bad for these kids. They’ve been through so much,” he said. “But, I feel like I’m leaving them in good hands. Craig (Delk) will do a fine job if they give him a chance.”

Delk is certainly one of the up-and-coming coaches in the state, taking over a Warren East program that struggled in the difficult 14th District. By his fourth year as head coach, the former F-S and Murray State baseball player had guided the Raiders to their first district crown since 1988.

Delk returned to F-S this season as an assistant coach in place of Vance but was suddenly thrust into the head coaching role. F-S Athletic Director Tim Schlosser said he had spoken to Delk, and if Shelton resigns as head baseball coach, then Delk will be offered the job.

“If we didn’t have someone the caliber of Craig Delk, then I don’t think Greg would have resigned,” said Schlosser....read entire article

Pelfrey Wins Wal-Mart Season Opener on Lake Cumberland
MONTICELLO, Ky. (March 22, 2004) – The 2004 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Mountain Division season kicked off Saturday on Lake Cumberland near Monticello, and Jonathan Pelfrey of Rockwood, Tenn., claimed the win thanks to a five-bass catch weighing 17 pounds, 12 ounces. He bested 198 Boater Division competitors to earn $4,986 and 200 points.

Pelfrey caught his tournament-winning bass flipping a jig. The tournament was his first career BFL event.

Rounding out the top five boaters are Craig Delk of Stanford (four bass, 15 pounds, 14 ounces, $2,493); John Devere of Berea (five bass, 13 pounds, 11 ounces, $1,695); Mark Denney of Eubank (four bass, 11 pounds, 12 ounces, $1,296); and Rex Pendergrass of Bristol, Tenn. (five bass, 11 pounds, 10 ounces, $1,097)....

...The Mountain Division’s next stop will be April 24 on Dale Hollow Lake. Each BFL division features four one-day events followed by a two-day Super Tournament to round out the regular season. The top 30 Mountain Division boaters and co-anglers based on year-end points standings will advance to the Wheeler Lake regional near Rogersville, Ala., Oct. 19-23, where they will compete against Bulldog, LBL and Shenandoah division anglers for a slot in the 2005 All-American. The winning boater at the All-American receives $100,000 cash, making it one of the most lucrative and prestigious championship events in bass fishing.

Every angler who receives weight credit in a tournament earns points, with 200 points going to the winner, 199 for second, 198 for third, and so on except for Super Tournaments, which award 300 points to the winner, 299 for second, 298 for third, and so on. These points determine angler standings. The Mountain Division boater who amasses the most points at the end of the regular season will earn $1,000 as the Yamaha “Be the Best” points leader, and the co-angler earning the most points will earn $500 as the Yamaha “Be the Best” points leader in the Co-angler Division.

The $6.3 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League features 24 divisions nationwide. In BFL competition, boaters and co-anglers are randomly paired, with boaters supplying the boat and fishing against other boaters and co-anglers fishing from the back deck against other co-anglers. IX. HUMOR

      Grandma Climbed The Family Tree

There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed as of late.
She's always reading history, or jotting down some date,
She's tracing back the family, we'll all have pedigrees,
Grandma's got a hobby, she's Climbing the Family Trees...

Poor Grandpa does the cooking, and now, or so he states,
He even has to wash the cups and dinner plates,
Well, Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee,
Compiling genealogy for the Family Tree

She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright.
No buttons left on Grandpa's shirts, the flower bed's a sight.
She's given up her club work, the serials on TV,
The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree.

She wanders through the graveyard in search of date and name,
The rich, the poor, the in between, all sleeping there the same,
She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze,
That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees.

Now some folks came from Scotland, some from Galway Bay,
Some were French as pastry, some German all the way.
Some went on West to stake their claims, some stayed there by the sea,
Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree.

There were pioneers and patriots mixed with our kith and kin,
Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin.
But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee,
Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree.

Their skills were wide and varied from carpenter to cook,
And one, alas, the records show was hopelessly a crook.
Blacksmith, farmer, weaver, judge, some tutored for a fee,
One lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree.

To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more.
She learns the joys and heartaches of those who went before.
They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept - and now for you and me,
They live again in spirit around the Family Tree.

At last she's nearly finished, and we are each exposed.
Life will be the same again, this we all suppose.
Grandma will cook and sew, serve crullers with our tea.
We'll have her back, just as before that wretched Family Tree.

Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell.
We talked about the Gospel and other things as well.
The heathen folk, the poor, and then - Etwas was fate, it had to be -
Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree.

We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything.
But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring.
She told him all about the past, and soon - Etwas plain to see,
The Preacher, too, was neatly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree

Dear cousins and Delk researchers,
I have been contacted by another descendant of James Randolph Delk (note: appears as
"Randel" on his marriage license 1825 Daviess County, Indiana. when he married Sarah Palmer).
Thus far I have ca. 60 descendants of his in my database including Mildred Kent who was featured in a past issue. Can anyone help tie James R, Delk into our tree?
- thanks, Fabian

Fabian,
I've found James R. Delk to be listed as both Randall and Randolph. If this is the father of my Eliza Delk , his father was Jordan Delk and his mother was Susanna Randall...they had 5 or more sons.
Jordan was the son of Joseph Jr. and Judith Jordan (dau of River Jordan)...
Joseph Jr was the s/o Joseph sr. and Hannah Thorpe (aka Tharpe)
Joseph sr. was the s/o Roger 2 and Rebecca ?
Roger 2 was the s/o Roger 1 and Alice Davenport.
I noticed the Roger 1 and 2 on your line
So my line would be as follows....
I found this information on a Delk message board......Delk Family Genealogy forum.. Genealogy.com It was posted by James V. Delk and a reply by Mildred Kent.
Now mind you, I don't have anything to back this up yet.
Phyllis

Fabian,
I have a 1830 and an 1840 census record of James R. Delk in Davies Co. IN . An 1825 marriage record of James R. Delk and Sarah Palmer in Davies Co. IN but I don't have any parents for him.

editors note: Randell Delk son of Jordan was executed ca. 1807/1808 in Buncombe county, North Carolina and can therefore not be the same person if the dates of birth, death and marriage you suggest are correct. The story of this Randell Delk appears in this issue of Delk News Quarterly under "Black Sheep".

Julia Anglin [prizumyahoo.com]
received 17.08.04

Greetings. My name is Julia Anglin daughter of Judy Linn Delk ( 4/26/53 - 6/18/99)
and Douglas Stuart Coward. My mother parents were David Henry Delk and Genevieve Wilson. David was born to Estella Kate White (Durham) Delk and had 2 brothers Tom and "Buster" and a sister (Maryleana?) Mar-a-leana, Estella's first husband was Benjamin Durham, and there is a surviving line from that family the lat name became Kitchens in the line. Estella was said to be daughter of Lena Gertrude Etheridge and Charles Porter White. Uncertainty as to the name of Lena's mother has always existed I have been told she was Artiemiza (Otemiza) Etheridge, who is listed on the Dawes final rolls as Choctaw.

I have several cousins that have been trying to find out more as well as my sister and I, I do believe this is all any of us have. Can Anyone help?

The name Zachariah Tayloriah (not Taylorbriar) is an unproven "Family Myth" about my grandfather. I never heard this name come up until after he died. All census show his name as George Delk since he was age 10 living with his maternal grandfather. This 1880 Casey Co. Kentucky census shows the initial "L" after the name name George. This "L" was not very plain and we were hoping it was a "T" to at least prove half of the family myth. After comparison with other "L's" & "T's" we could only conclude it was an "L".

In 1900, 1910, 1920 he is listed as George Delk. In his son Zora's Bible it says:

"George Delk's real name was Zachariah Tayloiah. First ancestor of Vernetta Walls arrived in this country in 1620 on the Mayflower. Her name was Lucinda Elizabeth Blaine. She married a Charles Yocum. George Delk moved to Casey Co. Kentucky at age 4."

All of those statements have been proven wrong. George Delk's widowed mother, Sidney Jane Delk, married Amos B. Goodman 2 July 1872 in Casey Co. Kentucky and George would have been age 2 at this time. His mother died 28 April 1874 in Casey Co. Kentucky and George would have been age 4 at this time. I think this is proof that George moved to Casey Co. Kentucky before age 4.
Lucinda Elizabeth Blaine did marry Charles Yocum BUT it was on 5 May 1831 in Lincoln Co. Kentucky some 211 years after she arrived on the Mayflower! : )
I have yet to see anyone's proof that my grandfathers name was George Zachariah Tayloriah Delk. The name Zachariah Tayloriah is only included in my notes but not as fact since it is unproven.

Unplotted Delks of Lamar co. Alabama

Wendy [wendyfarrellcomcast.net]
I am a direct descendant of Verena C. Delk (b.1856) and Henry C McNeese (b.1854 AL). They were married in Lamar Co, AL in 1874. I am trying to establish Verena/Virena) C. Delk's line. I have her father John M. Delk (b.1830 TN) married to Mary Elizabeth Hubbert (b.1834 AL).
I am wondering if John Delk (1860 census AL) m. Mary (1860 census AL), John's parents Mathew (b 180? NC) m Sarah (b. 1804 NC) are the right line to follow.
Thanks, Wendy

Unplotted Delks in Florida originally from Georgia

Judy Delk [jdelksurfmk.com]
Dear Folks -
On a lark, I put in the Delk surname, and got lots of interesting information.

Irving Delk, Sr, was my grand-father-in-law from GA, married Mabel Lilah Harris from Georgia, had Dorothy Lee and Irving, Jr (born Pierson, FL)

Irving Delk, Jr and Alieff Lula Godwin had 4 children in Ocala, FL 1952-1959, Lannis Rai Delk, eldest, and I married 1971.

The Delk cabin on Oak Island, Savannah, GA is "the old family homestead moved" to Oak Island preserve.

Any idea of connections? Happy to supply more details if you think we are.

Sincerely,
Judy Delk

editor: I wrote her back with some questions and she responded:

Dear Fabian -

I live in Ocala, Florida (north central part) and my maiden name is Hill.
My husband's siblings are: Larry Marlo, Lesa Carol (deceased 2003), Loren Bryan

Irving Delk, Sr. and Mabel moved from Georgia to Pierson, FL, for him to run the turpentine still and commissary. Later, he was a constable for the City of Ocala. I don't currently have much other information about Irving, Sr. His ex-wife only called him "the old man" - he left his wife and 2 children, and later remarried and had another son, David.

Irving, Jr died 12/1994

Have several major projects going on, and business obligations also, that preclude me from delving much right now.

Hope this helps some.
Judy Delk

Editor: I have made contact with Steve(n) Delk [Stevethesense.us] age 19, of Tennessee who supplied me with the following information:

My Dad: Delmer Delk
My Uncles: Darvin Delk, Roger Delk, Datsun(sp?) (Dickie) Delk,
My Grandfather: David Delk

Any of these names sound familiar to any of you Tennessee cousins?

J. J. Delk Identified

James V. Delk [james.delkstate.tn.us] or [jvdelk37397aol.com]

At some point about a year ago the newsletter (issue #8) asked if anyone knew how to connect J. J. Delk, Baptist preacher who was flag bearer for Civil War unit noted in a clipping regarding preachers.

J. J. Delk, Joseph Joshua Delk was the son of Jacob Benton Delk and Alma Anne "Anne" Crowell. From Roger I the line is as follows:

Roger Delk I m. Alice Davenport
Roger Delk 2 m. Rebecca
Joseph Delk 1 m. Hannah Thorpe
Joseph Delk 2 m. Judith Jordan
David Delk m. Patience Newsom
Joseph Delk 3 m. Frances Ross "Fannie" Dawson
Jacob Benton Delk m. Alma Anne "Anne" Crowell
Joseph Joshua Delk m. Fannie Jones.

Uncle Josh ask hear him addressed was a Baptist preacher first in TN where he farmed and reared a family. In the early 1880's he left Tennessee and moved to North Texas, first in Dallas County where he was the first preacher for the Baptist Church in DeSota. He later moved to Ellis County where he lived and farmed in the Lone Oak Community --that has now been basically absorbed by Waxahatchie. You can check this against the material that I sent to you. Much of Uncle Josh's family remain in North Texas and for the most part seem to have done well in life.

I also noticed that the clipping from the Maury Democrat with regard to J. J. Delk being flag bearer for his Civil War unit made reference to J. B. Cathey. J. B. Cathey, aka Jethro Brown Cathey was the great grandfather of Sharon Kitchen with whom you have had some contacts. He was the grandson of Sarah Cutbirth, who after her first husband Jethro Brown died, married Richard "Kettle Dick" Anderson. J. B. Cathey married Isabella W. Anderson, dau. of David Anderson and Isabella Rogers. I know that these are not Delk's but each in their own way are related to Delk descendants.

Both Richard "Kettle Dick" and David Anderson were my great, great, great grandfathers --they were brothers and are the ancestors of all the descendants of Samuel Gill Delk and Isabella Anderson - plus numerous of the descendants of Sarah Jane Delk, wife of Jasper Molder.

COMING UP IN FUTURE ISSUES
Here are a few ideas I have that will be handled In the next or upcoming issues:
  • Delk Politicians (Mayors, Senators, Congressmen etc.)
  • Please send in any other soldiers you have that were not listed in this or in a past issue. I know there are more out there.
  • Black Sheep in the family (cowboy gangsters, murderers and other criminals). "Black Sheep" are often difficult to plot as often no one openly claims them as relatives. Their have even been cases where people have changed the way they spell their names so as not to be associated with some "black sheep".
  • Anybody have any other ideas?

XIV. Closing Comments
As always I ask for your help. I would appreciate anyone contributing an article, an autobiography, a transcription of your family stories, images and history of family heirlooms, family recipes, images of old Delk homesteads, grave sites or any other info pertaining to our family's history.

If you know of a cousin that is not on the mailing list, let me know. Share your wisdom with the family.
If anyone can offer photos or scans that would be great. Maybe together we can create a big On-Line Delk Photo Album.
Let me know what interests you!
