Who was Roger Delk: A Brief Biography

Roger Delk (in some records also appears as Dilke, Delke, or Dilk) married his first wife Sarah in England and they had a daughter, Elizabeth born April 1622 in Middlesex, London. Roger Delk arrived from England to Virginia aboard the ship "South Hampton" in 1624. This was one of Sir Walter Raleigh's [5] ships used on his last expedition to South America. It is likely that his wife was to follow him later, but most likely died before. In any case, shortly after his arrival in the colony, he married Alice Davenport who had arrived on the same boat as he did.

Roger was indentured to John Chew and employed in 1624 on his plantation on Hog Island. He worked out his indenture by 1626, and in 1628, Francis West, "Governor and Captaine Generall", granted him 1,000 acres on Lawne`s Creek which flows into the James River just below Hog Island. The size of this patent suggests the possibility of some influence having been exerted in his behalf.

In a court session held at James Citye on May 7th 1627, it was ruled that Roger Dilk (by his own confession) had absented himself from his plantation without the knowledge or leave of his commander contrary to an order of Court for the space of 8 days complete, and he was fined to pay 25 pounds of tobacco for every 24 hours he was absent, totaling the sum of 200 pounds of Tobacco.

Despite this he rose rapidly in esteem and was chosen to represent "Stanley Hundred" in the House of Burgesses [6], the first legislative assembly in the western world.

He served during the session that began on Feb. 1st, 1632/33 and may have lived too high above his means at Jamestown (then called "James Cittie"), while attending the assembly in 1634 for he was outlawed for debts and a capias [7] was issued against him.

He appears to have died before 1635 as Alice his wife patented land in that year on Lawne's Creek in her own name. He had one son Roger II.

His wife Alice remarried Nicholas Reynolds and had two more sons. The 1,000 acres on Lawne's Creek, granted to Roger Delk I. by Gov. Francis Westand then became due Nicholas Reynolds on 26 Aug. 1637, he having married Alice, the widow of Roger. Roger II inherited this land when he came of age. On Aug. 23 1661: Roger Delk II (and his wife Rebecca) out of love & affection made a deed to his half-brothers Francis and Robert Rennells, born of his mother Alice Gregory (she was by then married a third time to John Gregory) by her (2nd) husband, Nicholas Reynolds (dec.) of Lawne's Creek," for a tract of land in Surry County.

I.
GREETINGS friends, cousins, and fellow researchers.

Again, I am happy to report that instead of having to find Delk cousins through tedious researching and cross referencing of names, more and more cousins are simply finding me, via the newsletter. So all the hard work is paying off!

NEW eMAIL GROUP: As we now have five people either living in Mississippi or having their Delk lineage relating to it, I have created a new Mail group for that state. One of these is an afro-american Delk. I think that many of the afro-american Delks are one time slaves of Delks that took on their master's surnames after they were freed, but there may also be some genetic connections as well. In any case I will be including afro-american Delks in the Newsletter and and database. I am interested in seeing how far back these lines can be traced. If anyone wants to be changed to this group please let me know.

Now for some sad news: a fellow researcher, Randolph Delk of Hattiesburg, Mississippi - who many of you may have corresponded with on various message boards over the years- died Sept. 10, 2004 at the ripe old age of 95. click here for obit

As I am often asked by new readers how I fit into the family tree I will, in the future include my own pedigree along with an image of myself, as well as links to my autobiography and my band's homepage.

Enjoy reading,

Correspondences: I ask you to please include your full name, first and last, on all correspondences. It saves me time when I sort them into over 130 files (one for each of you). I have received a few eMails with no name at all and had to go through my eMail address book to identify the author. Please spare me that.

Searching the Database at www.doles.org:
You may use the search feature for names of places that include "Delk" as well as cemeteries that have Delks buried in them.
Instead of typing in a surname type either "geography", or "cemetery", The info is then broken down by state or surname.

Laurie Delk Live On Stage

Laurie (Vocalist, Songwriter, Saxophonist)
I have expressed myself through music since I was a little girl when my mother and I took long drives and sang songs in the car making up lyrics as we went along. My love for music and singing grew as time passed. I became a closet singer-I literally sang in my closet because I wanted to cut loose, but I didn't want to disturb anybody. Some of my fondest memories are when I was a young girl singing alone in my bedroom with great conviction to songs like Cher's "Dark Lady," Paul McCartney's "Live and let Die," Doris Day's "Three Little Fishes" and Sammy Davis Junior's "The Candy Man." How eclectic!

Throughout my life, I have performed in numerous plays and musical theater productions. I have always enjoyed the stage. But, I have used my voice in other forums, too.

While studying Journalism and English at the University of Kentucky, I first used my voice on-air by working first at Magic 103 as a midnight to six DJ and then at public radio station WUKY where I produced my own news pieces and became one of their afternoon-drive hosts.

My first brush with comedy came during my junior year in college when I began writing and performing comedy at one of my local hangouts - Comedy on Broadway. It was my favorite release from the stress of college life.

Laurie moved to the D.C. area in mid-1999 after living and working in Japan for nine years. While settling back into American life, she began her resurgence as an entertainer in 2000 in the DC Metro area.

Throughout her life, she has won numerous entertainment competitions and performed in several plays and musicals. She also worked her way through college at the University of Kentucky partly by using her voice to perform singing telegrams and as a radio DJ for commercial station Magic 103 and public radio station WUKY.

Laurie has entertained audiences in the U.S., Bali Island and in Japan. With a powerful, melodic voice and engaging manner, Laurie's vocal and entertainment talents were in high demand while she lived abroad. While there, Laurie recorded TV commercials and voiceovers for numerous Japanese businesses including Mazda Motor Corporation.

She sang for the U.S. military for several functions and performed for her largest audiences so far at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan when she sang for several thousand at a Marine Corps Ball and at Friendship Day, an open-base event that draws a crowd of over 150,000. Laurie speaks and reads Japanese and French at a conversional level.

I have expressed myself through music since I was a little girl when my mother and I took long drives and sang songs in the car making up lyrics as we went along. My love for music and singing grew as time passed.

I became a closet singer - I literally sang in my closet because I wanted to cut loose, but I didn't want to disturb anybody. My first brush with comedy came during my junior year in college when I began writing and performing comedy at one of my local hangouts - Comedy on Broadway. It was my favorite release from the stress of college life.

I've played instruments, too. I began playing the clarinet in elementary school and the saxophone in high school. Although I play a few songs on the saxophone now, my primary focus is still singing and performance, both of which were improved tremendously by the amazingly supportive people I met during my travels abroad.

I have lived and studied in both Switzerland and England, but my longest stay abroad began in 1990 when I moved to Japan. I spent nine years there teaching English in Japanese Junior High Schools, giving speeches, doing voiceovers, copyediting, doing commercials and learning to speak Japanese.

The Japanese are the great creators of karaoke and they encouraged my singing. For that, I am eternally grateful. Taihen arigatou gozaimasu. I miss you guys so much!
I also spent some time in Bali learning from Balinese performers about stage presence and glamour. Nobody does glamour better than the performers I met in Bali! Thank you for welcoming me backstage to watch and learn while you worked your magic.

To everyone around the globe who has influenced my creativity and encouraged me to express myself, I thank you. To everyone who comes to see me perform…I hope you enjoy yourselves and leave feeling uplifted.

editor's note: I found Laurie Delk at an ELK site while researching for issue #11 Delk's involved in CHARITYS, FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS & (SECRET)SOCIETIES. By cross referencing her info I also found a web site with Laurie's mom, Claudette Evon Delk, who is a french teacher at Western Hills High School

Correspondence: We own land that M. H. Delk bought from the other side of my family (Barlow). The barlow's married into this land in 1860's.
I am long on info and short on documentation. There is an out of print book about Surry co. that has good info. It seems that the Delks spread out down route 617 from Bacons castle(Surry) to Delk's Crossroads. This lasted through the last Roger and part of Solomon's life. It seems that they gravitated down the blackwater river from "Huniford's Ferry" on rt 617 down to Rattlesnake Swamp and Blackwater river area. This is near Mill Swamp Church area.
The new part of Moreland's house is still standing, His will states that he left each one of his sons and Patsy (Wiley's widow) a farm. Until recently the home of Patsy was still standing (it has ben removed and rebuilt).
Fortunes reversed, as they do in rural America, and by the time of civil wars end Masolum was living in an existing house on a hidden farm across from one of our farms. There is reference to Delk's Swamp and a later Wiley Delk lived at the other end of this swamp (house still standing). There is a cemetery just inside of Surry with Delk's and a cemetery at a Delk home just up the road from me (which I have not seen).
Masolum served in CSA Surry light artillery (book by Ben Bell), Masolum H. was a hard scrabble farmer and Howard E. served in WWII. I own the home farm and am the first in the family to not be a full time farmer (although I have cows and am getting in debt like a farmer).
My sister was in the DAR, based on documentation. I named my son Dawson Roger after William Dawson Delk and Roger Delk. There are three direct male descendant of Masloum Howard (Scottle) and four grandsons. Only one in Isle of Wight co., Virginia.
We are located 7 miles northwest of Smithfield, Virginia., near the Surry co. line. These assorted ramblings should prove more entertaining than informative.... and now back to work!

I am Edward R. Harmon; I am doing research for the Abraham Jones ( born abt. 1720 in Scotland) family and related families. My mother started the process about twenty five years ago, unfortunately she died two years ago, without putting much of her information onto a computer. I am trying to place the information into a computerized format, using Family Tree Maker. I now have over 2,600 individuals entered at 18 or 19 generations. Our family has a long history of service to the nation as soldiers, sailors and airmen. So far, I have identified three Revolutionary war soldiers, four from the war of 1812, including one US Navy veteran, and almost two pages of confederate army veterans. Many males of the family also served in the SE states during the Indian wars as soldiers.

Gideon Delk and family

Gideon Delk and family
I live in Destin, Florida and my first Delk relative to move from Georgia to Florida was Gideon Jones. Gideon was the Grandson of Nancy Delk and James Brown Jones Sr.

Gideon was a soldier during the American "Civil War" or as we call it, more accurately, The War of Northern Aggression. Gideon was a member of Company K, 4th Georgia Calvary, CSA. His brothers, Jesse, Nathaniel, James and Edward were also CSA soldiers. Jesse was killed on 7/9/1863 in Virginia and Nathaniel did not return from the war.

When Gideon returned home he found that his wife, Laney Thrift, had died, leaving him with two young children and no wife.

Shortly after the war (1865 - 1866) Gideon moved from Georgia to North Florida where he met Martha Jane Quiett Hunter, a widow who's husband, Thomas Hunter, did not return from the war. Martha had two children and no husband. Gideon and Martha married, about 1866, and had 8 more children. Enclosed is a photo of Gideon and Martha with daughter Pollyanne taken in 1868.
I am working on the following surnames: Jones, Barker, Davis, Hart, Jordan, Quiett, Dixon, Brown, McDonald, Knox, Mizell

I own and insurance agency. I also own 4 other corporations involved in optics importing, wood sales, aviation insurance and gifts. I am the past president of the local Rotary Club, founder of a fire department/district, a water and sewer district, a scholarship foundation and several other community service organizations. I served 18 years as an elected public official in the state of Florida. I am married to the former Venica Lea Ellison and we have two children, a son and a daughter. Daughter served in Desert Storm in the USAF and the son is currently a Lt. in the USAF. I served in the 101st Airborne Division from 1964 through 1967.

Thank you and your brother for your donated time and your effort.

Greetings Fabian,
Thanks so much for your letter, nice hearing from you. I have spent 5 years researching my family's heritage and ancestry. Yes, I would love to get your newsletters, and I would love to link your web site to mine if you don't mind.
Biographical info: My husband and I are both retired. My husband retired with 26 years of service with CSX Rail Road in Tampa Bay Area. We travel a lot and we do go to church at abundant life church of god in Lakeland Florida. We don't have any pets. I spend a lot of time on the computer doing ancestry and I have joined the Red Hat Lady association. Wow what a life right, but we have the best of fun finding new friends and eating out. As for school I went to La-Belle High school in Labelle Florida and my husband graduated at White wood High School in Buchanan Co, Virginia, and spent 4 years in the Army as a crypto operator. He then worked 10 years with Ford motor company and now we live in Plant City, Florida enjoying our lives in retirement.

Monica's Quilt
For the names of all of those pictured above see details below. Note: due to the printing method the images on the quilt appear mirrored.

It is through my Grandmother Lelia Herrin Tillman that I connect in to the Delk family. My mother was her 4th child.

There are some Delks buried at the Guest Mill Pond Cemetery in Homerville Clinch County, Georgia including my Ggrandmother Candancy LeNora Delk Herrin.

I also have done quilts of my Herrin family. As for the quilt (image left), Candancy is the only born Delk on the quilt and appears twice. First she appears on the second picture on the top row. That picture was taken when she was young. The third image on the same row is her again just before she died in 1917. She is holding Nancy Eva Herrin. (see details below)

Wow its so nice to hear from ones family around the world!

I have visited your web site and find it most interesting. I live in Ohio but at the moment I'm visiting my other home here in Spring Hill Florida. I will be back in Ohio next Sunday and plan to delve into your web site more thoroughly. Looks like you've been very busy digging into genealogy.

I especially found your Cherokee connection most interesting. Many people back then did not recognize their Indian blood line as it wasn't the best thing for them, so when someone says they're on 1/64 they may in fact be much more. If you were to look at some of the photos of our relatives you would see the blood line is very dominate. I have folks who look like they just stepped off the reservation and yet they will not even discuss the fact that they are Native American by descent!

Fabian, I am the son of Ernest Evans (born Dennis Farmer) and Erma Lee (born Irma Lee)
Will Farmer was the son of Craton Evans and changed his name to Will Farmer from Evans. My dad was born as Dennis Farmer but changed his name back to Evans and took the name Ernest as his given name. There are many stories about why the name changes but I trust my dad's version.

His grandfather Craton was sent to prison for killing someone. To avoid retribution Will Evans changed his name to Will Farmer. Will was found dead in a coal mine apparently shot in the head. My dad's aunts Millie and Sarah (Nancy Jane Delk's sisters) saw the head wound. I do not know the name of the family in question that shot my grandfather.

My dad changed his name back to Evans after he married my mother Erma Lee. They moved out of that part of Kentucky and came to Ohio where I was born in 1939.

I have an older sister who you do not have listed. Her name is Lillian Marguerite Evans. She married Joseph Jablonski She is between my brother James Charles and me William Stanley Evans.

I have two younger brothers. David Lee Evans born 1944 and another brother Steven Alexander Evans born in 1948. These dates may be wrong. I am not at my computer in Ohio where I have all my information.

My father had two and possibly three sisters. He had a sister Mary and a sister Nancy. There is another half sister by another man after the death of Will Farmer. Her name was Heather but I don't know what ever became of her. He father is said to be Enoch Staley Hull but I have not been able to prove that. Enoch was the uncle of Cordell Hull of Roosevelt's cabinet.

Mary was married to an Oddie Shoupe and Nancy was married to William Paul. He (William Paul) is connected to the York family through his mother Charity York. My information is scanty because like I said all my info is back home in Ohio. I will be going back there next Sunday so after that I can give you better information.

As far as my siblings go Elizabeth was born with the surname Farmer and all the rest were born with the name Evans.

I have tried to get information on Craton Evans who supposedly died in prison in Brushy Mountain prison Tennessee but the state of Tennessee has not been helpful. They made me wait a full year for any information and then in the end they just refused to tell me anything.

Your cuzzin, Bill Evans

IV. Cemeteries where Delks & Roger Delks descendants are buried

In addition to names and dates cemetery inscriptions and markers can provide researchers with clues to family relationships (spouse of, parent of , child of, etc. ). Epitaphs can range from sentimental to humorous and may reveal a persons interest or religious fervor.
The cemetery itself, if affiliated with a particular church, may provide evidence of their religious affiliations.
Decorative elements included on markers often include symbolic devices of particular interest to genealogists. These symbols can provide useful information such as: military service, membership in an organizations or club. Symbols pertaining to the deceased's hobbies, occupation, or even cause of death are also not uncommon.

VIRGINIA

Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia
Elmwood Cemetery was established in 1853. By 1850 it was clear that burial lots in Cedar Grove Cemetery would soon be sold out and there was a need for more city cemetery space. John and Rebecca Tunis sold the City of Norfolk a tract of land known as Farmingdale for the creation of the new cemetery. In 1852 a local paper published a request for proposals to build a brick wall enclosing the new cemetery. Located due north of Cedar Grove Cemetery but separated by an arm of Town Back Creek, the two cemeteries were originally connected by a bridge. The creek and surrounding marshes were eventually filed in, expanding burial space and allowing the extension of the "Road to Princess Anne" which now separates the two cemeteries. Burial records are located in the Elmwood Cemetery Office. By Tim Bonney; Photos by Donna Bluemink.

V. BLACK SHEEP:

Every family has a few "black sheep". Sometimes they are so shunned from the family that they are no longer even claimed as kin. This can make researching difficult. To qualify for the Black Sheep section an ancestor must have committed any one of the following crimes:
Murder - Kidnapping - Armed Robbery - Treason - Theft particularly of any item of fame - Membership in a famous Gang - Political Assassin
(documented) - Member of the FBI's Most Wanted List - Political Expatriate - Extreme Public Embarrassment - Involvement in Witchcraft Trials - Bigamy (outside the Mormon faith, which condoned it at one time) - Persons expelled from normal society - Convicted felons (documented) - Incest (very difficult for some to talk about) - Known Pirate
(note: this list is similar to the criteria for members of (IBSSG) The International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists )

Hilltop Tracks a Tale of Death and Greed:
The Story of Delk's Cliff, Madison co. North Carolina
by Bob Burnette

Originally printed in The Hilltop The Student Newspaper of Mars Hill College and reproduced here with the kind permission of the author Bob Burnette

Picture yourself on the run from the law in the early 1800's. There is no place to hide from your fate but in the dense woods. In the rugged terrain, only the cliffs bring you shelter. Many are looking for you for a cash reward, dead or alive. One man you trust brings you food.

This sets the stage for a famous tale from Madison County, North Carolina during the early 1800's. The man's name is Jordan Delk, which gives the name Delk's Cliff to a Madison County landmark. Our local historian Bruce Phillips once again has brought a story.

"He (Delk) bought a piece of land down this side of Petersburg from a man. He didn't bother to check out what had gone on in the courthouse in Asheville. He just bought it. He bought this place, and he found out that the guy had already sold it to somebody else, and he sold it to Delk a second time. And Delk went down to see him about it - I guess you could say that - and saw him all right. And he climbed up in the window. The man was sitting there in a chair rocking a baby. And Delk put a rifle ball through his head "

"He took off. A lot of you know that when you do something bad enough, the first thing you do is run. Well he ran! And he wound up in this cave over on Ivy River, way up in the cliffs. He hid out in a cave. And the law would look for him and look for him. And they put a price on his head -- a $100 reward. Now in 1810, $100 would get anybody. There's lots of people would kill you for $100. I mean if they didn't really mind shooting somebody too bad. But Delk stayed in that cave."

"And there was this man down at the mouth of White Oak, and he came up the
