Who
was Roger Delk: A Brief Biography
|
Roger
Delk (in some records also appears as Dilke, Delke, or Dilk)
married his first wife Sarah in England and they had a daughter,
Elizabeth born April 1622 in Middlesex, London. Roger Delk
arrived from England to Virginia aboard the ship "South
Hampton" in 1624. This was one of Sir
Walter Raleigh's ships used on his last expedition
to South America. It is likely that his wife was to follow
him later, but most likely died before. In any case, shortly
after his arrival in the colony, he married Alice Davenport
who had arrived on the same boat as he did.
Roger was indentured to John Chew and employed in 1624 on
his plantation on Hog Island. He worked out his indenture
by 1626, and in 1628, Francis West, "Governor and Captaine
Generall", granted him 1,000 acres on Lawne`s Creek which
flows into the James River just below Hog Island. The size
of this patent suggests the possibility of some influence
having been exerted in his behalf.
In a court session held at James Citye on May 7th 1627, it
was ruled that Roger Dilk (by his own confession) had absented
himself from his plantation without the knowledge or leave
of his commander contrary to an order of Court for the space
of 8 days complete, and he was fined to pay 25 pounds of tobacco
for every 24 hours he was absent, totaling the sum of 200
pounds of Tobacco.
|
|
Despite
this he rose rapidly in esteem and was chosen to represent "Stanley
Hundred" in the House
of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly in the western
world.
He served during the session that began on Feb. 1st, 1632/33
and may have lived too high above his means at Jamestown (then
called "James Cittie"), while attending the assembly
in 1634 for he was outlawed for debts and a capias [4]
was issued against him.
He appears to have died before 1635 as Alice his wife patented
land in that year on Lawne's Creek in her own name. He had one
son Roger II.
His wife Alice remarried Nicholas Reynolds and had two more
sons. The 1,000 acres on Lawne's Creek, granted to Roger Delk
I. by Gov. Francis Westand then became due Nicholas Reynolds
on 26 Aug. 1637, he having married Alice, the widow of Roger.
Roger II inherited
this land when he came of age. On Aug. 23 1661: Roger Delk
II (and his wife Rebecca) out of love & affection
made a deed to his half-brothers Francis and Robert Rennells,
born of his mother Alice Gregory (she was by then married a
third time to John Gregory) by her (2nd) husband, Nicholas Reynolds
(dec.) of Lawne's Creek," for a tract of land in Surry
County. |

In
this issue:
I.
GREETINGS
friends, cousins, and fellow researchers.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all a safe, happy,
and healthy New Year!
As most of you know I experienced trouble with my computer just shortly
after the release of the last issue (early November). I would like to begin
by thanking everybody who helped me get my eMail Groups lists back together.
At that time I also lost all my correspondences - with the exception of
those that were included in the last issue. Therefore, if you sent information
or had questions please send your queries and info again. Also if you are
not in the correct mailing group, or have been lost altogether (means you
were not informed that this issue was released) then please let me know.
For our new readers:
Correspondences: I ask you to please include your full name, first
and last, on all correspondences. It saves me time when I sort them into
over 120 files (one for each of you). I have received a few eMails with
no name at all and had to go through my eMail address book to identify
the author. Please spare me that.
I hope our readers appreciate the advantages of the HTML vs. the old WORD
.txt format used for this Newsletter. The newsletter is now available
to everyone on-line immediately (no more sending .zip files), it is also
more easy to navigate, includes more visual material, and features an
improved layout.

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE FAMILY : "New Cousins":
Here are all the "new cousins" that have been found (or have
found me) via internet this quarter. Included are descendants of Ethelred
Delk. Note: they are not in alphabetical order!
While searching
the net for lost branches I came across the following message posted
to James V. Delk by Sharon Kitchen:
November 10, 2003
Ken Moore Delk needs your attention if you may be related
to him. "Dear
James, I wanted to write you to tell you that, unfortunately,
my brother, Ken Moore Delk, is suffering from the last stage
of renal failure because of Polycystic Kidney Syndrome. (He
was born July 31, 1947). He is on dialysis and has some hope
for a transplant from a younger healthier relative than I am.
If you can get this message out to my Delk-Baker relatives,
I'd really appreciate it. Ken needs our prayers!! Sincerely,
Sharon."
Sharon's address
is rkitchen swbell.net
OR Sharon Kitchen; 2595 Louisiana; Beaumont, Texas 77702-1324.
Her brother's connections to the Delk family are as follows:
Roger, Roger, Joseph,
Joseph, David, Joseph, Jacob Benton, Samuel Gill Delk, William
Leftwich Delk (and w. Elizabeth Vestal), Kenneth Moore Delk
(and w. Annie B. Baker), Frank Baker Delk (and w. Donnie Lucille
Woodard), Ken Moore Delk.
Ken's grandparents,
Kenneth Moore Delk and Annie B. Banker) left Maury and Hickman
Counties in TN in about 1908. He descends from the Delk's
and Baker's who lived in the Kettle Mills and Shady Grove
(Duck River) communities along the county line between Maury
and Hickman Counties of TN. The most likely candidates for
donating one of their two kidneys are people who are related.
Ken and his family would be appreciative to you for your consideration
is you are somewhat related.
|
|
I contacted cousin Sharon
Kitchen and told her that I could include her appeal for a kidney donor
in the next issue of Delk News, but due to the life and death situation
and the next issue only to appear two months later, I also felt it best
to forward per eMail the appeal directly to the Tennessee Cousins Mail
Group (this group containing donor candidates who are genetically more
closely related to Ken which would decreases the chances that the donated
kidney be rejected by the receiver). See also : POLL RESULTS
- MEDICAL HISTORY for important follow up. So now to introduce the two:

I have been a teacher most of my life. Teaching is something I enjoy
doing very much. Randy, my husband, was in the Army in the early 1960's
and was stationed in Metz, France. He and several buddies vacationed
in Garmish, Germany. He really liked the trains and would go to the
train station at night and have french onion soup. We live in Beaumont
Texas but Tennessee is more significant to our genealogy research.

correspondence:
I have worked on the
Delk family off and on for 27 years. Mostly I have concentrated on the Scott
and Campbell County, Tennessee area, and the Casey, Pulaski, Russell County,
Kentucky area. I just put a large file of Delks and related lines on Ancestry
World Tree and am still entering info. After I retired, I have finally found
the time to enter all my 27 years worth of paper files and group sheets
into FTM and have started uploading to World Tree project. I was married
to Eastil Ray Cochran on April 4, 1967. He died March 29, 1976. We have
3 children, Elecia Maye, Carmen Loretta, and Thomas Lee Ray. They are now
all married and I have 5 grandchildren and expecting the 6th one in April.
Other than my family and my flower garden, genealogy has for years been
my biggest hobby, or obsession, I am not sure which. I would love to discuss
Delk's with anyone and may be reached at the eMail address above.

I checked out your web
site and I can furnish you info on an entire group of Delk's out of the
rural area of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. My uncle Randolph compiled a "booklet"
with information concerning Delk genealogy. Randolph is now 94 and lives
in Hattiesburg near his sisters Carmen and Nell. There is a "David
Delk" family reunion each year in Hattiesburg that draws 50 or so regulars
and various others who trace back to the David Delk (son of Elisha) CLICK
HERE FOR REUNION DETAILS.
David served with the Tennessee cavalry in the Civil War and settled in
Jones county Mississippi afterwards.
All of my immediate family live in Dallas, TX. We live in the area just
southeast of White Rock Lake, off I-30 before it reaches the Mesquite city
limits. I was formerly employed by AT&T. By profession, I manage large
call centers. My kids are 16 and 15 and attend First Baptist Academy, a
medium size private school associated with First Baptist Church in downtown
Dallas.
Siblings: 1. Howard David, Jr.( b. 1941) died in 1973 as a result
of a cranial aneurysm. 2. Suzon (b. 1950) died 2001 the result of
emphysema and a slip/fall accident. 3. Clara Emily Delk Inglish (see
next cousin) and 4. Bobby live in the greater Dallas area with their
families. (See also the entry of his sister Clara Emily

correspondence:
A little background about
the Howard David Delk, Sr. family. My Daddy was born near Hattiesburg, Miss.
in 1916. Mother - Rubydene Estelle Nielsen - was born near Franklinton,
La. in 1920. They met while mother was attending nursing school in Hattiesburg
and were married in June of 1940.
My older brother - Howard David Delk, Jr. (David) was born Dec. 6, 1941.
I came along Feb. 21, 1945. The joke in the family was that David started
WWII and I ended it. Then Robert Elmer (Bobby) was born Aug. 20, 1949, Suzon
Elizabeth was born Dec. 19, 1950. All of us were born in Hattiesburg, Miss
where daddy worked for the US Post Office. He finally got smart and the
family moved to Tyler, Tex. in 1954. Our youngest brother, Edwin Nielsen
(Niel) was born Mar. 23, 1957. If you notice, Niel's initials spell END.
And daddy always said that was definitely the END of the kids. In Tyler,
daddy owned first a Mobile Oil service station and later a Texaco station.
Mother first worked the delivery room at one of the hospitals and later
was an office nurse for one of the OB-GYN doctors there in Tyler.
All of us kids went
to school and graduated high school in Tyler. I met my husband while I
was in Robert E. Lee High School, and we began dating while I was still
a junior. We married shortly after I graduated in 1963. Joe was a year
older than me. Our first son, Robert Joseph (Rob)was born Apr. 25, 1964,
the first grandson on either side of the family. My husband's older sisters
had only had all girls up to that point - 7 granddaughters on the Inglish
side of the family. Our other son, Jeffrey Scott (Scott) was born Oct.
18, 1966. Joe was in the petroleum engineering field, so we moved from
Tyler, to Dallas, to Houston.
In 1973, David suffered
a brain aneurysm and passed away leaving a wife and 2 small children (wife:
Barbara Shoenthal Delk; son: Morgan born Dec. 24, 1971; and daughter,
Ashley born June ?, 1973). Barbara and the kids later moved from Illinois
to Dallas with the rest of the family.
Then in 1976, Daddy
was diagnosed with lung cancer and died right around his birthday in Feb.
1977. Mom remarried later that year and moved to Dallas. Bobby had also
remarried and moved to Dallas. Suzon had hired on with Southwestern Bell
Telephone right out of college, and after a few years in Little Rock,
Ark. relocated to Dallas. Niel finally graduated college and came to Dallas.
That put all my family in Dallas and left only me and mine to make our
way back from Houston which we did when Joe changed companies so he could
be closer to his father. We came back to Dallas - well actually Plano
- from Houston in 1978 for the next 11 years. Our boys graduated Plano
Sr. High in some of the largest senior high school classes in the states.
Rob's graduating class was about 1900+ while Scott's was about 1800 in
size. Rob was active in wrestling and Scott played soccer and football.
That also put us here in the Dallas area when Mom was diagnosed with leukemia
in 1988. She went into remission for about 5 years and passed away in
Dec. of 1993.
Then the company Joe
was working for in Dallas closed it doors in 1989. And we had gotten in
that nasty habit of wanting a roof over our heads and food on the table,
and that required money! So back to Houston. Joe worked for Kellogg Brown
& Root. Of course it has only recently been called that since Halliburton
acquired the company. With the kids out of the house, Joe and I got involved
in many things. I took on a "part time" job organizing tennis
leagues for the USTA Adult Leagues in North Houston which I worked for
11 years along with running several tennis tournaments each year. Joe
and I played mixed doubles, and Joe was active on several men's teams.
Actually while Joe was playing a league match in Feb. of 2003, he had
a heart attack on the court and died before anything could be done. Since
both the boys and both my brothers were in Dallas, it made more sense
for me to move back this way again. Suzon had already passed away in 2001
at the age of 50.
So, here I am starting
a new life. Rob has given me a fantastic daughter-in-law, Liesl and 2
wonderful grandchildren -Madeleine, age 8 and Cade, age 6. Scott - well,
he's still looking for a wife. He lives about a mile up the road, but
he has a granddog for me.
All of us from the
Buford Delk family have a little written history . I know that Uncle Randolph
has a large manuscript on the Delk Family, but has not brought it up to
the Buford Delk generation or beyond. I read that last June. Uncle Randolph
is affected greatly by his age and ill health. He has turned all of the
genealogy work over to a cousin in Georgia or Alabama. I will need to
find out for sure. It may even be on a web site.
I Look forward to more
correspondence from family...
editors note:
Thank you both, Clara and Niel, for such an in depth insight into your
branch of the family's history. I would like to point out to our readers
that this branch of the family also organizes a family reunion. CLICK

I had put my genealogy search aside for about 2 years, then we moved and
now all of it is still packed in the garage. You have given me the incentive
to begin my research once again. I even attended a genealogy meeting tonight!
Lelia Annie Delk was my
grandmother, "mammy" as we lovingly called her. She lived to be
93 years of age and was clear of mind to the end. She could tell stories
of things that happened many years before I was born and I regret that I
did not listen more carefully but I was young and they did not seem important
then. She was married twice. The first time to a man named Gwaltney in Smithfield,
VA. He died and she married my grandfather, John Bunyon Childress. They
lived first in Surry Co., VA and later moved to Newport News--across the
James River--VA. So you see, she never was far from her place of birth.
Newport News was in Warwick County then. She lived there the remainder of
her life in the house I lived in until I married and left to live in CA
with my present husband, Linford Richardson, for the past 42 years! He was
the Chief of Police in Riverside, CA before we retired and moved to WA state.
My grandfather was a Baptist minister who brought two children into the
marriage to my grandmother--my "aunt" Ruth and "uncle"
Jeff. Neither are alive. They had one child, my mother, Alta Herma Childress
White who had five children. One was stillborn, one was "adopted"
by my Aunt Ruth to raise just across the street as my mother was unmarried
at the time. She then married my father, Herman P. White, Sr. and had my
sister, Virginia Anne White Beakey and my brother, Herman P. White, Jr.
He is deceased as well as my mother and father. My name is Nancy Jane White
Richardson.
I
am attaching a photo taken of my grandmother, Lelia Annie Delk, which
was taken before her first marriage (see image right).
I have a daughter who looks very much like her! We go back there on
occasion to visit my "half sister" and on our last visit
made it a point to take photos of gravestones of my deceased relatives.
We even went to Surry where I found some relatives had been buried
and then moved to a different cemetery for some reason. I would like
to pursue this someday as I found it rather odd although I am not
sure how to go about it.
I have looked at your
web site and found it very interesting. I did not realize that so
many Delk's lived in other states. I was surprised that not more
lived in VA. Now that I am again inspired to work on my family history,
I will need lots of guidance. Maybe you or some one other will be
kind enough to help.
Thank you so much,

correspondence:
Hi, My name is Richard
Allen Delk. I am a descendant of Ethelred Delk. I live in Iowa. My lineage
is through two of Ethelred's children. My grandfather was the son of John
Delk (Ethelred's oldest child.) My grandmother was the daughter of Sarah
(Delk) Maitlen (Ethelred's seventh child.) My grandfather was Elmer Ellsworth
Delk and my grandmother was Martha Luticia Maitlen. They were married in
1892 in or near Dunkirk, Indiana. My father was Charles Wesley Delk, their
2nd child. I am the 7th of nine children born to Charles Wesley Delk and
Bernice (Butler) Delk.
Ethelred and his wife, Nancy, had nine children. I have pictures of 6 of
them. John Delk and Sarah (Kerns) Delk had nine children. I have pictures
of all nine. I also have pictures of some of the Dicksons and some of the
Maitlens.
John Delk's wife was Sarah Kerns. Sarah's parents were John Kerns and Mary
(Summa) Kerns. The Summa family has quite a history. It is on the internet.
Probably looking under Sumi would get you there faster. Both John and Mary
were born in 1783. I have pictures of both of them in their later years.
My son has a web site at www.familyhistoria.com [7].
Some of my pictures are posted on his site. Mark Dickson has also used some
of my pictures on his site.
General James D. Delk is the grandson of my father's cousin. He is descended
from John Delk and Sarah (Kerns) Delk. I have not met him but have met his
late father and his grandfather. I keep in touch with one of his sons. Gen.
Delk was the Commanding General of the California National Guard that was
activated to stop the 1992 LA riots. He has written a book about this experience.
It is titled Fires & Furies - The L. A. Riots.
The article you directed me to about Joseph Worden was written by his daughter,
Meda. She was my father's cousin. I knew Meda. In fact much of my information
comes from material she gave to my sister. I believe Meda had evidence that
Ethelred was the son of Jacob Delk. I can not prove this. I also believe
that Susan Kendall's cousin, Kenneth Finton had this evidence. Again I can
not prove it. Kenneth Finton was descendant from George Washington Delk.
Kenneth Finton's son has his material. He lives in Colorado but has not
shared and probably won't.
According to every source I have, Ethelred Delk was born in 1784 in North
Carolina. According to the 1790 census, Jacob had children under 18. Court
documents from Johnston County, NC show a lot of Ethelreds in the county.
The name was popular. Ethelred showed up in Preble County, Ohio about the
same time Jacob and his son David showed up in Georgia. This was 1808-1809.
Ethelred served in the War of 1812 in Ohio. He married Nancy Byers in 1814.
He was 30 and she was 14. She was also pregnant with John.
Anyhow, I believe that Ethelred was Jacob's son.
I have the family record pages out of John's family bible. Unfortunately
the record for Ethelred, Nancy and beyond was cut out and is missing. Meda
(Worden) Langsdorf had these pages before giving them to my sister.

More Soldiers descendent of Ethelred Delk
Dick Delk [jddelk msn.com]
(see new cousins) writes:
There
are several descendents of Ethelred DELK that served in the
military. You had one in the last issue. Here are some more:
You have Solomon Bennet Delk, b. 8-6-1838, d 10-14-1910.
He served in the Civil War. His Father was John Delk eldest
son of Ethelred.
His brother, John Henry Delk, b 3-28-1845, d 10-12-1912,
served in the Spanish American War. The only verification I
have of this is a reference to his return from the Philippines
in 1899 in a book The History of Decatur County, Iowa. John
Henry is the great grandfather of General James D. Delk.
Franklin Elsworth Delk, b 7-14-1893, d 11-22-1967, served
in WWI in France and Germany. He was the son of Elmer Elsworth
Delk, grandson of John Delk, and great grandson of Ethelred
Charles Wesley Delk, b 8-3-1894, d 5-25-1967, served
in WWI in the USA. Most of the time in Camp Pike, Arkansas.
He was Franklin's brother and my father.
Russell Leland Delk, b 8-7-1895, d 2-7-1971, served in
WWI in France. He was Franklin's and Charles` brother. |

IV. FEATURE: Delk Cemeteries part II
As a logical follow up of Delk Religious affiliations (see past
issues) we can now explore cemetery's where Delks are buried. Knowing
our forefathers religious affiliations is often helpful in locating
their final place of rest.
In addition to
names and birth and death dates, genealogists may find marriages
and family relationships on the stones. Epitaphs ranging from sentimental
to humorous were many times included. Of particular interest to
genealogists are also symbolic devices decorating the sites. Indication
of military or fraternal organization symbols, and devices indicating
occupations, are useful clues to information sources about the deceased.
Individuals
written in red have not been identified
as Roger Delk descendants. All others can be found in the searchable
database at
www.doles.org [19].
If anyone knows of any other cemetery with Roger Delk descendants
that is not listed, please let me know. Also any corrections, photos
or additional information about gravesite locations would be greatly
appreciated.
Key to symbols:
* = born (think of the star that the three wise men followed that
marked the birth of Christ)
+ = death,(died on the cross)

The Bible can represents resurrection

There appears to be evidence that John Delk
was indeed a member of the clergy.

John Delk is listed as a Reverend

This detail
is from Jane's

very similar to the image
on the obelisk.

Jane (Hodges) Delk's
original tombstone
|
Propped up
against Jane (nee Hodges) Delk's obelisk is a stone
with her name and the same dates as seen on the obelisk.
This stone is most likely her original tombstone stone.
Her obelisk tombstones was most likely commissioned
and erected around the time of death of her husband
John Delk. The rose and bud motive, her name, her relation
as well as her birth & death dates appear on both
stones.
|
There
is a small stone propped
against her old stone.
Is this the marker of an infant
that the rose & bud alludes to?
If so, she would have been 75 yrs old.
|
|
|
This
view of the Delk gravestones shows that some sinking has occurred
and that both the obelisks as well as the tombstone of Mary
Louise Harrington are leaning slightly and will have to be
eventually restored or will one day fall over.
All three of the tombstones reflect the fashion of that times.
Pylons, columns and most exotic-style monuments are generally
dated between1860 and 1900 |

Art History -
The
obelisk has a long history of being used as funeral
decoration. The egyptians were the first to build
monumental obelisks. The greeks and the romans
continued the use and they again became popular
during the neo-classical art and architecture
revivals of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The Obelisk
There
is hardly a cemetery founded in the 1840s and
50s without some form of Egyptian influence
in the public buildings, gates, tomb art, etc.
Napoleon Bonaparte's 1798-99 Egyptian campaigns,
and the discoveries made at the tombs of the
Pharaohs, and the classic revival, led to a
revival of interest in the ancient Egyptian
culture. Obelisks were considered to be tasteful,
with pure uplifting lines, associated with ancient
greatness, patriotic, able to be used in relatively
small spaces, and, perhaps most importantly,
obelisks were less costly than large and elaborate
sculpted monuments. There were many cultural
reasons for the revival styles of the nineteenth
century. Freemasonry, while part of the overall
cultural influence, was not responsible for
the prevalence of obelisks. but John was known
to be a Freemason.

The
Washington Monument
|
This monument was built between 1848
and 1884 as a memorial to George Washington,
first President of the United States.
Its construction took place in two major
phases, 1848 to 1856, and then 1876
to 1884. The pause in construction work
was due to the Civil War and incurring
lack of funds. |
